Alias is a spy-fi TV series that ran from 2001-2005. It follows the adventures of Sydney Bristow, an extraordinary CIA agent undertaking deep black-ops missions to thwart exotic, sometimes fantastic threats to the United States. An over-arching goal of the series is the defeat of Arvin Sloane, Sydney's one-time guardian and friend, former boss, and constant nemesis. Sloane always follows his own agenda, which usually revolves around collecting, studying and understanding the artifacts of Milo Rambaldi, a 15th-century artist, inventor and prophet whose works are centuries ahead of their time.

The universe of Alias incorporates much of the typical fare of the spy-fi genre: technology on (or beyond) the cutting edge, agents of near-superhuman ability, organizations that exist in total secrecy, exotic locations, guns, explosions and martial arts. To all this, however, Alias adds a fantastic element in the prophetic works of Rambaldi, including devices which use 15th-century technology to produce 21st-century effects (including, in one episode, the creation of a neutron bomb). Some other examples of this are the creation of genetic doppelgangers; chemically-produced, indiscriminate, zombie-like killers; and ageless, possibly immortal characters. Such elements are usually just on the line between what is scientifically plausible and what is clearly impossible.
