The Proletariat and The Bourgeoisie

From Spfi Wiki

Image on the way

Created by Jester and Nam during a bout of whimisical creativity and sheer boredom, as most SPFI projects are, The Proletariat and The Bourgeoisie is based off off the Hanna-Barbera animated series SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron, a comic-stylized cartoon centering around a world of anthropomorthic felines (refered to as 'kats'). The story utilizes a rare solemn tone, though it still incorporates the expected humor as a bonus. It was the first of two separate storylines based off of the cartoon, the second being A Tomkat's Visit To Silent Hill.

The premise of the story was first stumbled upon when the two authors began discussing the incredibly close relationship shared by the two main characters, Chance "T-Bone" Furlong and Jake "Razor" Clawson and the fact that while their pasts and childhood's are hinted at, the series never pictures or outright describes the families and lifestyles the two grew up in. Immediately, the two unoccupied authors set out to remedy the lack of relatives in the SWAT Kats universe, and quickly lost control of the situation.

A large cast of diverse characters were created and Jester and Nam both agreed it would be a waste of effort to create so many characters and not use them for a story as well. Thus, through trial and error and a large amount of silly suggestions, the final storyline was finished, given both a chance to utilize the newly made characters, and a somewhat random moral that had not originally been planned on.

Part One

I Can't Believe We're Doing This

The storyline of The Proletariat and The Bourgeoisie: Part One begins when Jake receives a letter from his immediate family, summoning him to the apparently annual reunion he has been purposely absent from for the past few years. Upon discovering Jake's attempt to throw the letter out, Chance demands to know why he isn't going to go (and why he has never mentioned his family) and due to his partner's lack of a good excuse, demands that they both attend the reunion: Jake to apologize for missing so many times, and Chance to make sure he actually goes.

Upon their arrival, they are greeted by--and in Chance's case, introduced to--Silvia and Emily, Jake's two younger sisters. Chance rebukes Jake for his hesitation in agreeing to come and they go inside, meeting Marjorie, and Jake's mother and father. As Chance is introduced to more of the family, he begins to understand Jake's apprehension of returning home. Jake, whose birth name is revealed to be Jacques, is the only son of his well-to-do family, and as such has extra pressure to 'carry on the family name' as well as the emphasis his mother places on 'strengthening the breed' of the dying out purebred Havana Brown pedigree. His older sister Annarose has apparently been disowned for marrying a Blue-Point Siamese, and his sisters Majorie and Penelope seem intent on making Jake's life miserable, though for different reasons and in different ways. Even his oldest sister Caroline seems to be against him.

The climax of tension is reached when Vilhelmina announces that she has ensured Jake's future and placed him in an arranged engagement with a girl of upstanding breeding, Millicent Maneland. After a heated argument, Jake is bullied into attending a dinner with his fiance. Chance coaches him on how to let the girl down gently, but to their surprise, after they have met and spoken to Millicent, she breaks the engagement off herself, telling them that she wants to find her own happiness in life and not simply settle for the life her parents are attempting to set her up with and demonstrating a personal strength which was not previously apparent.

By the time the reunion is over, Jake is emotionally drained. Chance, feeling partially responsible for the dramatic happenings at Jake's heavily fueding family home, takes a detour and surprises Jake by introducing him to his own family, the not-quite-as-numerous Furlongs. Jake is immediately welcomed by Chance's mother, Margie, and his two older brothers Thunder and Shadow. Later he is introduced to Shadow's wife Jynx as well as her two best friends, Eddie and Buckley. After a very short time, Jake feels comfortable and accepted, and comments to Chance that one of the best things about the Furlongs is that his mother Vilhelmina would have absolutely hated them.

Several different incidents, both serious and amusing, take place during the unplanned visit--including a bank robbery, several implied attempts at forcing Jake to wear a dress, and a football game--endear Jake to the family and vice versa.

Thoroughout both of the visits, the families imply that Chance and Jake's relationship is more than platonic and Chance's brothers even go so far as to tease Jake about being 'the girl' if they ever were together. The story ends when the two return to their home and workplace in MegaKat City, and Chance acts on the hinted tension between the two and kisses Jake, who reacts in shock and runs away from the situation. After a serious amount of confusion and conflict, the two realize that an official relationship would change nothing about how close they are, and the story is concluded without any further romantic implications.

Characters

Further information: List of characters from The Proletariat and The Bourgeoisie

Chance "T-Bone" Furlong

Main Article: Chance "T-Bone" Furlong

Chance, the taller and more brawny of the two main characters, is a gruff and well-built tomcat born in the slums of MegaKat City who represents the muscle and stubborn determination of the SWAT Kats, both in their civilian and vigilante guises. He is well-known for his extremely easy-going nature, his short-fused temper which causes him to be prone to small fits of violence, and his incredible fighting and flying skills. His alternate persona as a SWAT Kat is "T-Bone" and he is the pilot of the team.

Jake "Razor" Clawson

Main Article: Jake "Razor" Clawson

Jake is the younger and invariably shorter of the two main characters. A somewhat slim, purebred Havana Brown, he is the backbone and moral binding of the SWAT Kats, as well as being the technical whiz and the more skilled martial artist. Polite and withdrawn, Jake is the less imposing of the two and is known to avoid confrontation especially where his family is concerned. His alternate persona is "Razor" and he functions as the gunner, weapons and vehicular specialist, and overall maintenance.

Trivia

  • The proletariat (derived from Latin proles, "offspring") is a term used to describe a lower social class, usually identified as those people who had no wealth other than their sons. The term was initially used in a derogatory sense before it became a sociological term to refer to the working class.
  • Bourgeoisie (Old French burgeis, meaning "an inhabitant of a town") is a classification used in analyzing human societies to describe a social class of people who are in the upper or merchant class, whose status or power comes from employment, education, and wealth as opposed to aristocratic origin.
  • Part of the original premise for the story was a relationship developing between the two main characters. The decision for the two to never form a romantic bond until the very end was meant to ensure that idea did not overtake the entire storyline. It was portrayed as more of a subplot in the end, taking the form of only subtext throughout the first half of the story, and not gaining more attention until the second portion.
  • Despite their different social aspects, it is implied in the story that if the SWAT Kats wanted to, they could both pay off the debt they owe to MegaKat City with aid of their families, but for unexplained reasons, neither does.
