Present

Roth is the grandson of Beauregard and Mary Lynn Avery. A senior at Nowhere High School (a school made popular by Tank Jenson's adventures in Das Spiffy), Roth is looking forward to a future without the hassels of post-secondary education or a steady job. It's his dream to write and illustrate his own horror stories...or, at the very least, adult comics. He narrates LiaL through first-person, present-tense, detailing the Undead invasion on his world and his high school. It seems the campus of Nowhere High School just can't seem to keep itself out of trouble (in reference to the cultists who had attempted world domination through a handful of its students years earlier) and soon student and teacher alike are walking amongst the hordes of the otherworldly Undead. This leaves Roth and his neighbor--a freshman named Sadie, who is infatuated with gothic rock, Japanese fashion, and our hero--in a tragic situation and they are forced to battle their way back to Roth's home, where his grandparents are, thankfully, safe. Once home, Beau insists Roth hide Sadie behind the shelves in the wine cellar, where there is a secret room. Roth obliges, against Sadie's wishes, and drags her downstairs so that he can be away from the violence and have some time to think. Unfortunately, the shelves in the wine cellar topple on top of Roth and Sadie, knocking them unconscious on impact. Upon awakening, Roth and Sadie realized they were injured and open to attack without the shelves to disguise them. What was worse was that there were no longer sounds of his grandparents struggling against the invasion. They were alone. Roth and Sadie entered through the hidden door and travelled through the tunnel until they reached a ladder leading up. They had no light and little air, so they were forced to feel along the wall until their heads bumped against a rock pushed over the top of the tunnel. It took both Sadie and Roth to push the rock away and they managed barely--and, unwittingly, sent the Spirit of the East, Fei Yen, tumbling to her death. It was her shrine that they had pushed off of a cliff and this was how they entered the Continent.
