Gbadolite, located in northern Équateur, is a moderate-sized town of approximately 42,000 people. Located in close proximity to the border Zaire shares with the neighboring Central African Republic, it is a laid-back and secluded town, peaceful and without guile. Mobutu's family originally hailed from this obscure village, making it his ancestral home. As such, the town has been richly blessed under his guidance; roads are in pristine condition, electricity is reliable, sanitation is adequate, jobs - especially as servants - are plentiful, and quality medical care is readily available. Unemployment and crime are low and the standard of living is relatively high, especially when compared to the rest of the impoverished country.

The town is known for its regal and splendor. No less than three of Mobutu's eleven palaces are located here, and the town was the site of many white elephant projects, such as the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Ubangi River. Also present are: lush ornamental gardens; an elaborate Chinese pagoda; well-tended plantations stocked with Argentinian goats, Swiss cows, and Venezuelan goats, as well as a variety of crops ranging from exotic fruit to tobacco; a luxury guesthouse; an international airport capable of handling the Concorde; and a barracks housing a large contingent of DSP soldiers. 3 L-500 MDLS Missile Defense Laser Systems also provide protection for the booming town-city.

Gbadolite's luxury has earned it the nickname "Versailles in the Jungle."
