World War II is the name given to the brutal war that enshrouded the earth from September 1939 to August 1945. On the most basic level, it was the fight between the Axis and the Allies for global domination.

World War II's origins go back to WWI. The Treaty of Versaille upset the Germans, the Great Depression made everybody poor and angry, the Russian Revolution set the stage for a showdown between fascists and communists. The Sino-Japanese War didn't help, either. Japanese imperialism extended to Manchuria and beyond, and tensions lingered from the Russo-Japanese War. Dictators coming to power in the aftermath of WWI got more and more power-hungry, and alliances formed, resulting in the creation of the Axis powers: Germany, Italy, and J-pan.
[edit] The Beginning
The war in September of 1939 as a power-mad Hitler invaded Poland in the blitzkrieg. The Poles were overwhelmed, so Hitler began plans for other things- the anschluss with Austria, the invasion of Czechslovakia, Hungary, the Sudetenland, and more. They also had the Battle of Britain between the RAF and the Luftwaffe. (The RAF won thanks to radar.) Germany began to plan a full-scale invasion of England.

On December 7, 1941, the Hitler's Japanese allies bombed Pearl Harbor on a "day that will live in infamy," according to FDR. This infuriated America so much they declared war on everybody. They launched an invasion through North Africa into Sicily and then Italy, taking down that big ape Mussolini. With Admiral Charles Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur, they fought back the Japanese in the Pacific. Tojo had awoken a sleeping giant, as promised. His name was Monstro.

The Allies launched D-Day on June 7, 1944. They fought through France, then the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes of Belgium, bombed Dresden, and on to Berlin. Hitler shot himself in 1945 with Eva Braun in the bunker. The Japanese still wouldn't give up, and FDR died, giving Truman the option: drop Da Bomb? He dropped it.KABOOM! went Hiroshima. Same for Nagasaki. Japan surrendered.

WWII ultimately brought about the Cold War- with Germany and Japan out of the way, America and the USSR were the only ones left, with nukes to boot. They became enemies pretty much the day the war ended. But World War II gave us words like SNAFU and Catch-22, characters like Patton and Kilroy, and thousands of movies with John Wayne.
