Each house has two prefects for each of the upper years (fifth, sixth, and seventh), one male and one female. These prefects are selected by the headmaster or headmistress. All prefects are informed of their position the summer before the start of the term. All prefects start as fifth years and usually continue to hold their badges for the following three years. However, this is not always the case. Upon their entrance into the seventh year, one male prefect is chosen as a Head Boy and one female prefect is chosen as a Head Girl. Their empty seventh year prefect positions ares filled with two other students from their house(s).
On Friday, January 13, 2006, Corina Mayfield became unsatisfied with the current roster of prefects. Although the move was highly unusual, she decided to shift the duties midterm. Naturally, this created a great deal of disagreement within both the student body and the staff.
Duties
Prefects are expected to:
- show first years to their dorms
- patrol corridors at least once a week
- control common room activities
- diffuse fighting
- generally set good examples for other students
Powers
Prefects are allowed to:
- remove points from students
- use the prefects' bathroom
- be out in the corridors later than other students
- attend prefect meetings
- act smarmy about their badges
It should be noted that prefects are NOT allowed to:
- remove points from other prefects, the head boy, or the head girl
- award detention
