The Smash Nationals is a yearly prestigous Smash Tournament run by Master Hand at the Smash Mansion. It is considered the biggest Smash event of the year and is considered a 'grand slam' on the Cokepsi Circuit. It is held from September to early-December. 2007 marks the only year with two Smash Nationals held so far.

Format

Singles

From 2005 onwards, there are 30 competitors selected (20 by wildcard, 10 by qualification) for the tournament. Six groups are made of five, and they compete in a round robin. The top sixteen from those six groups qualify for the next stage, and it is an elimination bracket from then on.

Doubles

In an open entry format, doubles teams will compete for a spot in the final sixteen (by groups and top points), where they will then play off in an elimination bracket.

Sandbag

The 'Sandbag' competition is a new event for 2007.

Criticism and Controversy

2004 controversy

Peach was crowned winner of the 2004 event but was stripped of her title when it was revealed in replay footage that she used a 'you have something on your face' technique to gain a free, unprotected winning Smash. She has not competed at the event since.

2007 controversy

Jigglypuff's 2007 win has been disputed by many critics, as still photographs of the final show more than twelve people fighting Marth at the same time. Jigglypuff disputes the claim of other people fighting for her, but it is a mystery to some how she managed to be in the commentary box giving commentary the entire match.

Cokepsi Criticism

The excessive promotion of Cokepsi is heavily criticised in the telecasts of the event. Coordinator Master Hand claims there is no excessive promotion, but in the telecast of the 2002 final, a still picture of Cokepsi took up three-quarters of the entire screen.
