Medical leaders today reiterated their call for the architect of the failed junior doctors' recruitment system to quit and said it was only the goodwill of medics that meant there was not chaos on the wards.

Dr Mark Porter, the deputy chairman of the British Medical Association's consultants' committee has written to The Daily Telegraph calling for Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer to resign over the Medical Training Application Service fiasco.

This year the process saw 33,000 applicants for 22,000 jobs, leaving thousands of doctors unable to secure training posts.

In his letter, Dr Porter says the BMA believes it is time for Sir Liam to accept responsibility for a disaster which has thrown the careers of thousands of doctors into turmoil".
