MTAS Statement from the Chairman and Deputy Chairmen of the BMA Central Consultants and Specialists Committee (CCSC)

14 May

The CCSC is listening to and acting upon the widely expressed concerns of colleagues regarding MTAS and is actively engaged in securing a practical solution that does not abandon trainees to even further uncertainty, nor subject consultants to greater burden or risk patient care.

This crisis has been absolutely one of the Government’s and its MMC advisor’s making in their rejecting the advice of the medical profession. This approach to managing the future of healthcare is something that must change in the interests of our patients as well as our profession. Such a situation must never be allowed to happen again and the future of training and healthcare policy in general must in future be led by the profession.

A number of consultants have suggested that boycotting the remaining revised application process would be in the interests of our junior doctor colleagues. We have supported the Junior Doctors Committee view that this is not the case.

We acknowledge that some colleagues in some disciplines and deaneries feel very strongly about this but we continue to recommend that all members should in the first instance seek support from askBMA before taking individual action. We are already actively supporting members involved in this process to ensure the best possible outcomes.

The BMA is conducting its own root-and-branch review of MMC in parallel with the independent review and will publicise its findings in due course. We would welcome and encourage colleagues' input to this via the regional representative structures and committees or directly to info.ccsc@bma.org.uk
