Numbers

  • 10CC. Sheet Music (1974) (έ) (3/5; heard 14-Jun-07; 'Somewhere in Hollywood' is still epic; 'Clockwork Creep' wonderfully creative. Rest a mix of catchy and dross.)
  • 10CC. The Original Soundtrack (1975) (έ) (3/5; heard 15-Jun-07; Some good tunes, some poor. Filmic Godley-Creme vs. rocky Stewart-Gouldman compositions)

A

  • Abba. The Definitive Edition (έ) (4/5; heard 17-Jun-07; Definitive, but I still can't decide how good they were.)
  • Abba. Live (έ) (2/5; heard 17-Jun-07; Makes you realise how dependent Abba were on the studio for their sound.)
  • AC/DC. Highway to Hell (1979) (έ) (3/5; heard 18-Jun-07; 2 stonking tracks—'Touch too much' and 'Highway to Hell'—but to these old ears, the rest sounds dodgy.)
  • Aerosmith. Aerosmith (έ) (2/5; heard 19-Jun-07; 'Dream On' is a fantastic song; the rest is average. Needs better songs or Alice Cooper themes/theatrics.)
  • Afro Celt Sound System. Volume 1: Sound Magic (έ) (4.5/5; heard 19-Jun-07 {twice!}; brilliant rhythms)
  • Afro Celt Sound System. Volume 2: Release (έ) (2/5; heard 21-Jun-07; very disappointing; no good tunes; band losing track of what made 1st album great.)
  • Afro Celt Sound System. Volume 3: Further in Time (έ) (3/5; heard 28-Jun-07; not much better than Vol 2; despite Gabriel & Plant vocals, ACSS have lost sight of need for great tunes.)
  • Air. Moon Safari (έ) (3/5; heard 30-Jun-07; Pleasant enough, but this CD has never excited me.)
  • Akkerman, Jan. Profile (1972) (έ) (2/5; heard 20-Jun-07; music lacks groove; lute tracks are interesting but not great; poor compared to Focus)
  • Akkerman, Jan. Tabernakel (1973) (έ) (3/5; heard 26-Jun-07; more cohesive than PROFILE;even the lute-playing is better)
  • America. History—Greatest Hits (έ) (1/5; heard 27-Jun-07; only 'Ventura Highway' contains anything attractive to today's ears)
  • Anderson, Jon. Olias of Sunhillow (έ) (2/5; heard 16-Sep-07; tripe; not very musical; silly story.)
  • Anderson, Laurie. Big Science (έ) (έ) (2/5; heard 7-Jul-07; is this really modern classical? Have I got time for this? Perhaps. Ungripped so far. Come back later.)
  • Anka, Paul. Rock Swings (έ) (3/5; heard 1-Jul-07; the joke is a tad stale now, but the music is not too bad.)
  • Argent. In Deep (έ) (3/5; heard 2-Jul-07; some crackers on LP side 1, but it's hard to take side 2 seriously. No wonder we never played it at Oundle!
  • Argent. Encore (έ) (έ) (1/5; heard 9-Jul-07; Abysmally recorded live album.)
  • Armatrading, Joan. Joan Armatrading (1976) (έ) (3/5; heard 17-Jun-07; Still listenable, but no outstanding tracks.)
  • Art of Noise, The. The Ambient Collection (έ) (3/5; heard 12-Jul-07; Not awful, but not completely ambient either. Very dependent on Mellin's 'Robinson Crusoe'.)
  • Art of Noise, The. Who's Afraid of (έ) (1/5; heard 10-Jul-07; Meaningless drivel. Purely a sonic demonstration record now. 'Moments in Love' is OK.)
  • Arzachel. (έ) (3/5; heard 29-Jun-08; Hillage and Stewart covertly record a 44-minute LP one afternoon in 1969. Some Canterbury sounds, some churchy organ, and much uncharacteristic rock guitar soloing by Hillage.)
  • Asia. Asia (έ) (2/5; heard 12-Jul-07; Prog-rock goes easy listening. Post-punk, post-prog confusion over direction. Bombastic stadium rock, here we come.)
  • Atkin, Pete. Midnight Voices (έ) (2/5; heard 25-Jun-08; insiped music, flat sixtysomething singing, but the lyrics are intriguing. Why did Tim Blackstone rate the Atkin-James LPs so highly in the Seventies?)
  • Atomic Rooster. Death Walks Behind You (1970) (έ) (4/5; heard 19-Jul-07; Vincent's finest 35 minutes. The guitar-and-organ interplay is highly reminiscent of Lord and Blackmore, although it may precede them.)
  • Auger, Brian. Get Auger-nized! (έ) (2/5; heard 1-Aug-07; utterly missing the point of the 1970s. Who was this aimed at? It's not even Radio 2 fodder.)
  • Automatic Man. (1976) (έ) (3/5; heard 22-Jul-07; Duff hairstyles but this is a good album that I barely knew until this decade!)
  • Average White Band. the ultimate collection (έ) (3/5; heard 31-Aug-07; Too derivative of EW&F, Bowie's 'Fame', H&O, post-Katy Dan etc, but two great singles at the start of each CD)

B

  • Bacharach, Burt. The Look of Love. Warwick, Springfield etc (έ) (Heard 10-Aug-07; 5/5; The master of song, but totally defined by the Sixties.)
  • Bad Company. Bad Company (1973) (έ) (Heard 3-Aug-07; 3/5; Free-like, and better recorded but the music is just not as good.)
  • Bad Company. Straight Shooter (έ) (Heard 6-Aug-07; 2/5; More Foreigner than Free. Disappointing)
  • Badfinger. Come and Get it (έ) (Heard 6-Aug-07; 2/5; 80s re-recording by one surviving band member on Hallmark; big drum sound!)
  • Baker Gurvitz Army. The Baker Gurvitz Army / Elysian Encounter (1974) (έ) (Heard 12-Aug-07; 3/5; Nostalgic, but they weren't the best at this Layla-like genre. So now we know that they led nowhere, why bother today?)
  • Basement Jaxx. the singles (έ) (Heard 9-Aug-07; 3/5; one excellent track ('Good Luck') but the rest is mediocre.)
  • Beach Boys, The. Pet Sounds (1966) (έ) (Heard 9-Aug-07; 4/5; The version to get—excellent sleeve notes, revealing a large list of session musicians.)
  • Beach Boys, The. Sunflower / Surf's Up (1970) (έ) (Heard 8-Aug-07; 4/5; very mixed bag of pap and classics. 'Sunflower' is very forgettable.)
  • Beach Boys, The. Surf's Up (έ) (Heard 22-Aug-07; 4/5; A few flawed tracks, but some out-and-out classics too.)
  • Beach Boys, The. Classics selected by Brian Wilson (έ) (Heard 17-Aug-07; 4/5; Not a fantastic selection—too personal.)
  • Beatles, The. 1 (έ) (Heard 27-Aug-07; 5/5; If you only buy one Beatles album, it must be this.)
  • Beatles, The. 1962-1966 (έ) (Heard 29-Aug-07; 4.5/5; Illustrative of the Beatles' early career, the Byrds and Dylan influences, and the magnificence of McCartney's compositions.)
  • Beatles, The. 1967-1970 (έ) (Heard 3-Sep-07; 4.5/5; Mostly great.)
  • Beatles, The. Abbey Road (1969) (έ) (Heard 19-Aug-07; 3/5; Best produced, but a curious mix of nursery rhymes ('Maxwell' and 'Octopus') and rock attempts ('I Want You').)
  • Beatles, The. Revolver (έ) (Heard 14-Aug-07; 4/5; Museum piece, but 'Eleanor Rigby' and 'Tomorrow never knows' still stand out.)
  • Beatles, The. Rubber Soul (έ) (Heard 14-Aug-07; 3/5; only 'Michelle' really scores today.)
  • Beatles, The. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) (έ) (Heard 31-Aug-07; 4/5; Sonically fantastic on my 5-way, but the tunes are not all outstanding; though John does well for composing 'L-S-D' and 'Day in The Life'.)
  • Beatles, The. Love (έ) (Heard 30-Aug-07; 3/5; Crucial but not great; 'Get Back' orchestral intro is the highlight.)
  • Beatles, The. White Album (έ) (Heard 6-Sep-07; 2/5; The most overrated album of all time? As usual, no credits for other musicians and backing vocalists)
  • Be Bop Deluxe. Air Age Anthology (έ) (Heard 22-Sep-07; 2/5; The past 30 years have not been kind to BBD. Their biggest problem, besides poor songwriting, is the flatness of Nelson's voice.)
  • Beck, Jeff. Blow by Blow (1975) (έ) (Heard 1-Oct-07; 4/5; Outstanding production values, but the tunes -- especially on Side One -- aren't always that melodic.)
  • Beck, Jeff. Wired (1976) (έ) (Heard 3-Oct-07; 3/5; Hard to love, but some catchy numbers. The star here is Narada Michael Walden, composer of the best four tunes.)
  • Beck, Jeff, Bozzio, Terry and Hymas, Tony. Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop (έ) (Heard 10-Oct-07; 1/5; Awful 1980s production values, particularly the electronic drum sound; track #5 is a Rypdal rip-off.)
  • Bishop, Stephen. Careless (έ) (Heard 20-Sep-07; 4/5; pretty, and more stars on it as backing musicians than I had realised. Whatever happened to him?)
  • Bjork. Debut (έ) (Heard 21-Sep-07; 3/5; Probably not too bad if I could be bothered to try to like it.)
  • Black Sabbath. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (έ) (Heard 27-Sep-07; 5/5 for Side One, 2/5 for Side Two. 4/5 overall for Sabbath's best-ever album.)
  • Black Sabbath. Sabotage (έ) (Heard 1-Oct-07; 1/5; How could this be so bad after Sabbath Bloody Sabbath? The worst follow-up to a classic ever?)
  • Black Sabbath. The Best of Black Sabbath (έ) (Heard 8-Oct-07; 3/5; Awful sleeve notes (no idea which song came from which album; too much swearing). Two hours of Sabbath is two much in one go. Clearly their first album is very good!)
  • Blind Boys of Alabama. Spirit of the Century (έ) (Heard 12-Oct-07; 3/5; Only impresses as the sound of the negro slaves in the cotton fields. Then it really grabs you. Otherwise, why?)
  • Bomb the Bass. Beat Dis—The Very Best of (έ) (Heard 12-Oct-07; 2/5; 'Winter in July' is totally messed up, and only 'The Air You Breathe' is any good.)
  • Bon Jovi. Slippery When Wet (έ) (Heard 11-Oct-07; 3/5; a bawdy romp through AOR, but better than most. Memories of the videos when in Dallas in 1987, waiting for James to appear!)
  • Bonzo Dog Band, The. Vol. 2 — The Outro (1968) (έ) (Heard 11-Oct-07; 3/5; Tadpoles is great; Keysham offers nothing.)
  • Bonzo Dog Band, The. Gorilla (1967) (έ) (Heard 22-Oct-07; 4/5; Probably the Bonzo's best, with Jollity Farm, Big Shot and The Intro and The Outro.)
  • Boston. Boston (έ) (Heard 12-Oct-07; 2/5; Pleasant enough, but it almost kicked off the inane world of AOR. Only Foreplay is now striking.)
  • Bowie, David. Aladdin Sane (1972) (έ) (Heard 14-Oct-07; 4/5; Bowie's best, but also his most sleaziest and most perverse. I still wouldn't listen to it with parents or children.)
  • Bowie, David. "Heroes" (1977) (έ) (Heard 17-Oct-07; 2/5; Needs more listening, but the songs aren't melodically great, and the experimentation on Side Two sounds amateurish now.)
  • Bowie, David. Hunky Dory (έ) (Heard 16-Oct-07; 4/5; Some of Bowie's strongest songs.)
  • Bowie, David. Diamond Dogs (έ) (Heard 22-Oct-07; 4/5; Actually not at all bad, and the musicianship of Bowie's new band is far better. Even his electric guitar-playing is much improved.)
  • Bowie, David. The Best of David Bowie 1969/1974 (έ) (Heard 22-Oct-07; 4/5; Hard to fault; a great selection.)
  • Bowie, David. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972) (έ) (Heard 18-Oct-07; 3/5; Good songs, but the band shows its inadequacies in the premier league. Not sure that all the arrangements are musically in tune!)
  • Bread. Greatest Hits (έ) (Heard 15-Nov-07; 3/5; Twee, but some pretty tunes amid the guff.)
  • Brown, Arthur. Fire! The Story of (2003) (έ) (Heard 24-Dec-08; 2/5; Demonstrates well that Brown's good patch started in 1968 with 'Fire' and ended with 'Captain Lockheed'/'Tales of Mystery and Imagination' in 1976)
  • Brown, Arthur. The Crazy World of (1968) (έ) (Heard 22-Oct-07; 2/5; A flimsy album built around the excellent Fire/Rest Cure single.)
  • Brown, James. The Godfather (έ) (2/5; heard 3-Nov-07; not my cup of tea; poorly recorded, but this was 1965.)
  • Browne, Jackson. The Pretender (έ) (5/5; heard 31-Oct-07; Outstanding, heartfelt songs, far more varied than on the 'Greatest Hits' song.)
  • Browne, Jackson. The Very Best of (έ) (3/5; heard 9-Nov-07; Browne is ill-served by a double-CD greatest hits collection, because it is unthematic, and it shows the same-ness of many of his tunes. 74-77 was his best period!)
  • Bruford, Bill. Feels Good to Me (έ) (4/5; heard 10-Nov-07; an excellent start, but the inclusion of Kenny Wheeler and Annette Peacock meant this was a wide-ranging debut. Side Two is just so much better than the first!)
  • Bruford, Bill. Master Strokes 1978-1985 (έ) (4/5; heard 10-Nov-07; Confirmation that One of a Kind is Bruford's best album. Variety in drumming styles seems a bit forced at times.)
  • Bruford, Bill. One of a Kind (έ) (5/5; heard 12-Nov-07; Brilliant— Bruford's masterpiece, and probably Allan holdsworth's too. More consistent and less quirky than his solo debut.)
  • Buchanan, Roy. Roy Buchanan / Second Album (έ) (2/5; heard 12-Nov-07; Not my cup of tea at all: Christian evangelical, country and blues. But sure he could play guitar!)
  • Jeff Buckley. Grace (έ) (5/5; heard 12-Nov-07; Outstanding; along with OK Computer, the best rock album of the 1990s; great variety, great voice, great songs.)
  • Jeff Buckley. Sketches of my Sweetheart The Drunk (έ) (Disc 1 heard 13-Jun-07; 2/5; track#2 is great, the rest poor. Suicide because of writer's block?)
  • Jeff Buckley. Live at Sin-e (έ)
  • Budd, Harold. The Pavilion of Dreams (έ) (3/5; heard 29-Nov-07; better for driving to than I had expected, but still over-long, given the lack of variety.)
  • Budd, Harold. Luxa (έ) (3/5; heard 20-Nov-07; pretty, languid, but not worth dedicated listening!)
  • Buggles. The Age of Plastic (έ) (1/5; heard 12-Nov-07; apart from 'Elstree' and 'Video Killed...', this could be one of the worst records of all time!)
  • Bush, Kate. Aerial (έ) (3/5; heard 17-Nov-07; parts of CD2 are excellent, but other parts suggest that Bush still doesn't fully understand what makes great music.)
  • Bush, Kate. Hounds of Love (έ) (3/5; heard 18-Nov-07; not quite the classic that some claim, but still interesting.)
  • Bush, Kate. Hounds of Love (1985) (έ)
  • Bush, Kate. Never for Ever (έ) (4/5; heard 20-Nov-07; probably her best; catchy tunes and some really nice harmonies. Blow Away (For Bill) is an especially nice surprise.)
  • Bush, Kate. The Dreaming (έ)
  • Bush, Kate. The Sensual World (έ) (3.5/5; heard 18-Nov-07; interesting in parts, even attractive. Not her catchiest.)
  • Bush, Kate. The Whole Story (έ) (5/5; heard 18-Nov-07; impossible to fault, and it was great to hear Erika singing Babooshka afterwards. It's just not very relevant today.)
  • Byrds, The. The Very Best of (έ) (2/5; heard 27-Nov-07; historically important, I may concede, but not my cup of tea. Obviously very dependent on Dylan, but some of the vocal harmonies are like the Who -- which came first?)

C

  • Camel. Breathless (1978) (έ) (3/5; heard 30-Nov-07; Not their best, although 'Summer Lightning' has a magnificent guitar solo. The sleevenotes by Tracy are indeed very Saxondale.)
  • Camel. Mirage (1974) (έ) (3/5; heard 29-Nov-07; Very much of its time; mild progressive, a few changes in time-signatures etc; not quite enough variety, but it has its rock moments. Very Saxondale.)
  • Camel. Moonmadness (1976) (έ) (4/5; heard 2-Dec-07; Almost their best.)
  • Camel. Rain Dances (1977) (έ) (4/5; heard 12-Dec-07; possibly their best.)
  • Camel. The Collection (έ) (3/5; heard 2-Dec-07; the orchestral/live versions of The Snow Goose are intriguing.)
  • Camel. The Snow Goose (1975) (έ) (3/5; heard 11-Dec-07; Nostalgic; not bad; not brilliant.)
  • Can. Cannibalism (έ) (3/5; heard 14-Dec-07; a curious and appealing mix of Can's shorter tracks.)
  • Can. Ege Bamyasi (έ) (3/5; heard 2-Dec-07; James didn't like it, but the freedom of the whole set-up, for me, is great.)
  • Can. Future Days (έ) (4/5; heard 12-Dec-07; less 'spacy' than I remembered. 'Bel Air' has its moments.)
  • Can. Soon over Babaluma (έ) (3/5; heard 14-Dec-07; Overrated.)
  • Can. Tago Mago (έ) (4/5; heard 14-Dec-07; Very important; Mushroom is worth trying to put to video!.)
  • Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. Trout Mask Replica (έ) (3/5; heard 20-Dec-07; still very challenging: unmelodic, rarely rhythmical, mostly nonsense. Yet it is so cool!)
  • Caravan. Cunning Stunts (1975) (έ) (2/5; heard 14-Dec-07; Melodic, and at times riffy, but seemingly incapable of writing a song that is great throughout.)
  • Caravan. For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night (1973) (έ) (2/5; heard 14-Dec-07; Melodic, and at times riffy, but seemingly incapable of writing a song that is great throughout.)
  • Caravan. If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You (έ) (3/5; heard 18-Dec-07; their second album, much better than expected and more interesting than their later stuff. 'Asforteri' is particularly interesting. The clash between the melodic and the riff-based rock is obvious on this album. It didn't resolve itself happily on the later albums.)
  • Caravan. In the Land of Grey and Pink (1971) (έ) (3/5; heard 18-Dec-07; marginally better than 'Plump' and 'Stunts'. 'Nine Feet Underground' is intriguing.)
  • Caravan. The Canterbury Collection (έ) (2/5; heard 21-Dec-07; 1980s recordings, but could have been worse.)
  • Carey, Mariah. Greatest Hits (έ)
  • Carpenters. Only Yesterday (έ) (3/5; heard Dec-07; several classics, but a number of mediocre tunes too.)
  • Cash, Johnny. Greatest Hits (έ)
  • Cassidy, Eva. Songbird (έ) (2/5; heard 17-Jan-08; did we buy this because she was dead??)
  • Chemical Brothers. Come With Us (έ) (3/5; heard 13-Jan-08; good at times, but too much like someone dabbling on a Yamaha groovebox.)
  • Chemical Brothers. Surrender (έ) (2/5; heard 14-Jan-08; no real merit apart from the single.)
  • Chic. C'est Chic (έ) (3/5; heard 13-Jan-08; as Stuart Maconie has also said, 'I Want Your Love' is by far the best track on this album.)
  • Chi-Lites. The Best of the Chi-Lites (έ) (4/5; heard 2-Apr-08; a potential source of ironic video music soundtracks! Bought because the Chi-

Lites were mentioned in The Sopranos.)

  • Clapton, Eric. The Cream of (έ) (4/5; heard 13-Jan-08; the classics are still great, and the so-so still so-so.)
  • Clapton, Eric. Unplugged (έ) (4/5; heard 14-Jan-08; more satisfying than The Cream of because it's a whole. Strangely the guitar-playing is nothing great!)
  • Clapton, Eric. 461 Ocean Boulevard (έ) (3/5; heard 17-Jan-08; of course 'Let it Grow' is magnificent; the rest is so-so.)
  • Cocteau Twins. Heaven or Las Vegas (έ) (4/5; heard 18-Jan-08; some gorgeous tunes, but what does it all mean?)
  • Collins, Phil. Face Value (έ)
  • Collins, Phil. No Jacket Required (έ)
  • Collins, Phil. ...But Seriously (έ)
  • Coldplay. A Rush of Blood to the Head (έ) (3/5; listened 26-Jan-08; not their best, but some reasonably solid tunes at the heart of the album)
  • Colosseum II. Strange New Flesh (1976) (έ) (1/5; heard 7-Feb-08; awful jazz-aspiring vocals; awful British jazz-rock tune structures; occasional melodic interludes; Gary Moore was wasted!)
  • Commodores, The. The Very Best of (έ) (3/5; heard 7-Feb-08; Some great singalong tunes, but Lionel Richie only had three separate song ideas, yet made five or more albums from them.)
  • Cooder, Ry. Bop till you Drop (έ) (3/5; heard 14-Mar-08; a couple of good tracks (#3 and #4), but little else. Nice American guitar-picking style.)
  • Cooder, Ry. Borderline (έ) (2/5; heard 14-Mar-08; the same style as 'Bop' but no great tunes.)
  • Cooper, Alice. School's Out (έ) (4/5; heard 12-Mar-08; great theatrical rock, inspired by Arthur Brown and influencing Alex Harvey. Back in 1972, we would have rebelled, but it was the school holidays.)
  • Cooper, Alice. Billion Dollar Babies (1973) (έ) (3/5; heard 12-Mar-08; more singles, but somehow not quite as good as 'School's Out'.)
  • Corrs, The. Talk on Corners (έ) (3/5; heard 14-Mar-08; Very much of its time, post-Riverdance etc. Two good tracks in the second half.)
  • Costello, Elvis & the Attractions. Armed Forces (1979) (έ) (2/5; heard Mar-08; Two good tracks ('Oliver's Army' and 'Accidents') and the rest seems undistinguished in 2008.)
  • Cream. Disraeli Gears (1967) (έ) (4/5; heard Mar-08; The best tracks (#1 and 2) are blues-rock, but there's much psychedelia here too.)
  • Cream. Wheels of Fire (1968) (έ) (4/5; heard 1Mar-08; Hard to believe the very rocky live concert on CD#2 is by the same band that created the studio LP on CD#1.)
  • Crosby, David. If I Could Only Remember My Name (έ) (4/5; heard Mar-08; A poor title and cover, but good music inside; guitar-based, but not folksy or country, nor Eagle-like; here the voice is another instrument—the lyrics are unimportant, to me at least.)
  • Crosby, Stills & Nash. (έ) (listened 11-Jun-06; better than expected; contains the Woodstock starter; Simon & Garfunkel-like)
  • Cross, Christopher. Christopher Cross (έ) (2/5; heard 6-Apr-08; Apart from 'Wind' and 'Sailing', an insipid end to a superb decade of rock music.)
  • Culture Club. The Best of Culture Club (έ) (2/5; heard 6-Apr-08; Singles band with crossdressing leader fades quickly in early 1980s.)
  • Cutler, Chris. Twice Around the Earth (έ) (2/5; heard Apr-08; unreviewable—just a series of sound clips—but inspiring nonetheless.)
  • Czukay, Holger. Movies (έ)

D

  • Dan, England & Coley, John Ford. The Very Best of (έ) (1/5; heard 7-Apr-08; two pleasant singles, the rest complete dross, and yet those two are laden with happy memories of the 1970s. Very nostalgic.)
  • Danny Wilson. Sweet Danny Wilson (έ) (3/5; heard Apr-08; two great singles, particularly Never Gonna Be The Same—why did they disband so early?)
  • De Burgh, Chris. Spark to a Flame (έ) (1/5; heard 21-Apr-08; rightly reviled. Sub-Mike and the Mechanics material. Who were the backing musicians?)
  • Deee-Lite. Infinity Within (έ) (2/5; heard 11-Apr-08; nothing to hate, but nothing to get ecstatic about. I could almost have generated many of the drum'n'bass grooves myself!)
  • Deee-Lite. World Clique (έ) (3/5; heard 21-Apr-08; Several great disco tunes; they showed how simply good dance music could be made.)
  • Deep Purple. Burn (έ)
  • Deep Purple. Burn (remastered) (έ) (3/5; heard May-08; DP becomes Free, particularly on 'Mistreated'. Far better than we dared hope.)
  • Deep Purple. Fireball (1971) (έ) (3/5; heard May-08; Little for Led Zepp to fear from this outing. The instrumental interludes can be amateurish.)
  • Deep Purple. In Rock (1969) (έ) (4/5; heard May-08; an outstanding debut for Mark Two of DP, and 'Black Night' was a great single.)
  • Deep Purple. Machine Head (1972) (έ) (4/5; heard May-08; for me, brilliant and life-changing. The solos are wonderful. But 'Leo' and 'Pictures' are pretty feeble.)
  • Deep Purple. Machine Head (έ)
  • Deep Purple. Made in Japan (1972) (έ) (3/5; heard May-08; Important for many years, but some of the extended tracks now seem to be filling time. Fans who had soaked up the atmosphere wouldn't have complained!)
  • Deep Purple. Made in Japan (remastered) (έ)
  • Deep Purple. Who Do We Think We Are (1973) (έ) (3/5; heard May-08; Underrated, some great guitar licks well worth copying.)
  • Del Amitri. Change Everything (έ) (3/5; heard May-08; A wonderful start, but it all falls away after 'Surface of the Moon'. A great pity.)
  • Dire Straits. Brothers in Arms (έ) (2/5; heard 6-Jun-08; How did we ever like them??)
  • Dire Straits. Love over Gold (έ) (3/5; heard 6-Jun-08; Their best, although that says little.)
  • Dire Straits. Money for Nothing (έ) (2/5; heard 6-Jun-08; How did we ever like them??)
  • Doobie Brothers, The. Minute by Minute (έ) (3/5; heard Jun-08; Overrated, but good.)
  • Doobie Brothers, The. Stampede (έ) (4/5; heard 6-Jun-08; possibly their best. Pat Simmons keeps the band afloat, particularly with 'I Cheat'. Curtis Mayfield's arrangement is also rescient. Their vices had not yet become habits!)
  • Doobie Brothers, The. Takin' it to the Streets (έ) (3/5; heard 6-Jun-08; Michael McDonald chucks out much to create his own sound. No more Bill Payne, no more Curtis Mayfield. But the tunes were great! I remember the title track played by Nicky Horne on 'Your Mother ...'.)
  • Doobie Brothers, The. The Best of the Doobie Brothers Live (έ) (1/5; heard 9-Jun-08; Pointless 1996 performance with both Johnson and McDonald singing (but not together) before a small Sony audience. Released three years later, probably after much doubt as to its merits.)
  • Doobie Brothers, The. The Captain and Me (έ) (4/5; heard 30-May-08 on way back from CChCh with James; a classic, although only 'Ukiah' resuscitates Side Two.)
  • Doobie Brothers, The. Toulouse Street (έ) (3/5; heard 11-Jun-08 pleasant background music, and nicely remastered. Not as mediocre as I remembered!)
  • Doobie Brothers, The. What were once Vices are now Habits (έ) (3/5; heard 30-May-08; Not bad; memories of listening, sadly, on my own in that 1976 year off.)
  • Doors, The. L.A. Woman (έ)
  • Doors, The. Strange Days (έ) (4/5; heard 8-Oct-08; Suddenly 'When the Music's Over' seems epic; Radiohead would have been proud of the very modern guitar solo!)
  • Doors, The. The Best of the Doors (έ) (3/5; heard 11-Jun-08; Indicative of how dependent the band's reputation is on its eponymous album.)
  • Doors, The. The Doors (1967) (έ) (4/5; heard 11-Jun-08; One of the strongest debut albums ever. Poetic and weird, with great musicianship.)
  • Drake, Nick. Way to Blue (έ) (2/5; heard 21-Jun-08; can't quite get into this shy folk music. Seemed to pave the way for John Martyn.)
  • Dylan, Bob. Greatest Hits (1967) (έ) (3/5; heard 11-Jun-08; Now know these tunes well enough not to be annoyed by his quirky delivery.)
  • Dylan, Bob. The Essential (έ) (2/5; heard 21-Jun-08; the most annoying voice in popular music. The original albums provide a better setting.)

E

  • Eagles. Desperado (1973) (έ) (3/5; heard 17-Jun-08; Possibly the best Eagles album, despite the repeats that suggest a shortage of material.)
  • Eagles. Hotel California (1976) (έ) (3/5; heard 16-Jun-08; The singles are now utterly dull, and One of these Nights was always better. 'Victim of Love' is the best track.)
  • Eagles. Live (έ)
  • Eagles. On the Border (1974) (έ) (3/5; heard 19-Jun-08; Pretty in parts, but some duff tracks on Side Two.)
  • Eagles. One of These Nights (1975) (έ) (3/5; heard 17-Jun-08; Apart from the single, this is an annoying album. On the Border is better.)
  • Eagles. The Best of (έ) (3/5; heard 22-Jun-08; nottheir best compilation; more insipid than the cover implies. How did it collapse so quickly after Hotel California?)
  • Eagles. The Complete Greatest Hits (έ)
  • Earth Wind & Fire. Let's Groove (έ) (4/5; heard 19-Jun-08; Better than I remembered! Many of the tracks need to be played at high volume, but most are reminiscent of revision sessions and some Saturday afternoons spent alone in the 1970s.)
  • Egg. The Civil Surface (1974) (έ) (3/5; heard 19-Jun-08; a weird mix of pleasant prog and almost classical wind quartet music. The uncertain ending on one of the later tracks is funny. Poor old Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin!?)
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Emerson, Lake & Palmer (έ) (3/5; heard 22-Jun-08; a powerful beginning, with elements of both classical and jazz. But it has no soul.)
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The Atlantic Years (έ) (4/5; heard 22-Jun-08; should have plundered 'Welcome Back...' for the Tarkus version, but otherwise a sound selection.)
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Trilogy (έ) (3/5; heard 20-Jun-08; Classical rock. But did any girls buy it?)
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Welcome back my Friends to the Show that Never Ends (1974) (έ) (3/5; heard 25-Jun-08; abysmally recorded, and CD#2 has a poor choice of material, but all the music on CD#1, especially the Tarkus rendition, is great. All three were great musicians, and Palmer's drum-playing style sounds unique now.)
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Works Volume 1 (έ) (2/5; heard 27-Jun-08; self-indulgent twaddle? Well, side four always seemed quite desirable.)
  • En Vogue. Best of (έ) (3/5; heard 22-Jun-08; three good songs; they were correct to end it all. It was becoming repetitive.)
  • Enigma. MCMXC a.D. (έ) (2/5; heard 25-Jun-08; two, possibly three, tunes strung out over an entire album in a gregorian-chant-meets-sadomasochism fest. Still finger-tapping but sounds mostly dire today.)
  • Eno, Brian. Ambient 1 / Music for Airports (έ) (2/5; heard 27-Jun-08; groundbreaking then, today just annoying.)
  • Eno, Brian. Desert Island Selection (έ) (1/5; heard 27-Jun-08; shows how awful Eno was after 'Warm Jets' and before ambience.)
  • Eno, Brian. Discreet Music (1975) (έ) (2/5; heard 27-Jun-08; pretty annoying, but not quite as bad as 'Desert Island Selection'.)
  • Eno, Brian. Here Come the Warm Jets (1973) (έ) (2/5; heard 27-Jun-08; surprisingly guitar-based wackiness. Baby's now only smouldering.)
  • Eno, Brian and Byrne, David. My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (έ) (4/5; heard 28-Jun-08; highly innovative, highly dependent on Byrne's rhythmic guitar, but some of the tunes are so-so.)
  • Enya. Watermark (έ) (1/5; heard 1-Jul-08; how could we have been impressed by this new age twaddle? Only the almost-solo singing tracks are now worth a listen.)
  • Eurythmics (έ)
  • Eurythmics Peace is Just a Word (έ)
  • Eurythmics. Sweet Dreams (έ) (3/5; heard 1-Jul-08; perky pop. Stewart had some good riffs, and Lennox had the words and voice. Did we need the S&M motif?)
  • Evanescence. Fallen (έ) (3/5; heard 2-Jul-08; one tune, or at least one style, here really. Semi-angelic voice on top of grunge guitar and drums, singing about gothic themes. Works for a while!)
  • Everything but the Girl. Walking Wounded (έ) (3/5; heard 4-Jul-08; an updated version of the Eurythmics, but probably not quite as good or as important.)

F

  • Fagen, Donald. Kamakiriad (1993) (έ) (listened 7-Jul-08; 3/5; more sophisticated rhythms than Nightfly but Fagen's voice had clearly weakened in the 11 years since his solo debut.)
  • Fagen, Donald. The Nightfly (1982) (έ) (listened 4-Jul-08; 3/5; overrated debut solo album; hard to say what is missing without Becker—maybe 'colour' and 'variation' make the simplest answer. The rhythms are disappointing. Were some tunes composed on a solo Casio keyboard?!)
  • Fagen, Donald. Morph the Cat (2006) (έ) (listened 8-Jul-08; 3/5; some perverse key changes, and more interest in the rhythm than the tune, but not bad overall. Why not team up Fagen, who can no longer sing well, with an X-Factor contestant?!)
  • Fairport Convention. Meet on the Ledge (έ) (listened 12-Jul-08; 3/5; Quite promising, I now see, although I can understand why Sandy Denny's voice always put me off.)
  • Family. The Best of (έ) (listened 22-Jul-08; 1/5; Mostly unimpressive pub rock. Poor song-writing, only succeeding with Burlesque.)
  • Faust. Faust IV (1973) (έ) (listened 9-Jul-08; 3/5; hard to slam, and clearly influential (e.g. on Eno), but I won't listen to this too much...)
  • Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood Mac (1975) (έ) (listened 9-Jul-08; 3/5; the beginnings of soft-rock; 'Rhiannon' is still stand-out, but there are other moments.)
  • Fleetwood Mac. Greatest Hits (1988) (έ) (listened 9-Jul-08; 3/5; the occasional low e.g. 'Oh Diane', but generally offering proof that Nicks was their best songwriter.)
  • Fleetwood Mac. Rumours (έ) (listened 19-Jul-08; 3/5; The Monopoly of in-car music: marvellous for no-one, but despised by few, so gets played as the compromise choice. The last few, less well known songs on the CD are the best.)
  • Fleetwood Mac. Tusk (έ) (listened 9-Jul-08; 1/5; deservedly slated; mostly Buckingham's hashes in the studio with the rest of the band pulled in; only the stuff on Greatest Hits is worth keeping.)
  • Focus. At the Rainbow (1973) (έ) (listened 18-Jul-08; 4/5; a great selection of tunes (I now realise), but rather short.)
  • Focus. Focus 3 (1973) (έ) (5/5; heard 14-Sep-07; Focus at their very best; Akkerman was the best guitarist at the time; the long pieces outstanding; a masterpiece)
  • Focus. Hamburger Concerto (1974) (έ) (heard 21-Jul-08; 3/5; ...Cathedrale... continues to impress, but the rest is very so-so. A band in decline after a very brief peak.)
  • Focus. Moving Waves (1972) (έ) (heard 19-Jul-08; 3/5; if you're over-familiar with Hocus Pocus, then much of the rest can seem easy listening.)
  • Focus. Ship of Memories (1976) (έ) (1/5; heard 22-Jul-08; 3/5; All inspiration, and most of its rhythm section, gone, Van Leer and Akkerman see what mileage there is to be had in funk and drum machines. Dismal.)
  • Fordham, Julia. Julia Fordham (έ) (listened 22-Jul-08; 2/5; Uninspired chanteuse makes flimsy use of impressive session musicians. 80s tosh.)
  • Fordham, Julia. Porcelain (έ) (listened 24-Jul-08; 2/5; More of the same and with that 80s bass sound, only with less expensive session musicians.)
  • Foreigner. 4 (έ) (listened 24-Jul-08; 3/5; Some great tracks—Waiting..., Urgent, I'm Gonna Win, Girl on the Moon and Don't Let Go, but this guitar-based rock was too formulaic.)
  • Foreigner. Greatest Hits (έ) (listened 25-Jul-08; 2/5; Worse that 4; reveals some very poor tracks from the early years.)
  • Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Welcome to the Pleasuredome (έ) (listened 25-Jul-08; 2/5; The start was undoubtedy exciting, but the rest is really junk. Even the Art of Noise, providers of all the decent instrument-playing here, have since been debunked.)
  • Franklin, Aretha. The Best of (έ) (heard 11-Aug-08; 4/5; Not brilliant recording quality, but many absolute classics, and several with a great groove.)
  • Free. Heartbreaker (1972)
  • Free. Fire and Water (1970) (έ) (heard 13-Aug-08; 3/5; their first decent LP, to my ears. The best was yet to come.)
  • Free. Heartbreaker remastered (έ) (heard 17-Aug-08; 4/5; Strangely, the informative notes don't aid my enjoyment of the music, which is denser, murkier and different to all previous albums, due to Bundrick's piano and organ.)
  • Free. The Free Story (1973) (έ) (heard 12-Aug-08; 1/5; Muffled, and now so old the CD has corroded. But how can any Free compilation omit 'Wishing Well'?)
  • Free. Free (έ) (heard 13-Aug-08; 2/5; Undistinguished, and no gems.)
  • Free. Tons of Sobs (έ) (heard 14-Aug-08; 2/5; Intriguing debut, with traces of folk (first track) and Sabbath (Visions of Hell'). Particularly on that track, Rodgers' singing is out of tune!)
  • Free. Live! (1971) (έ) (heard 14-Aug-08; 3/5; Good but not great. Their equal-best to this point.)
  • Free. Highway (1971) (έ) (heard 13-Aug-08; 2/5; Undistinguished, and no gems. The insipid, nameless cover was, as Johns noted, a disaster.)
  • Fripp and Eno. The Essential (1973) (έ) (heard 15-Aug-08; 3/5; Nice to have this discontinued, proto-ambient CD, which contains all of No Pussyfooting, and 'Evening Star' is pleasant; but the final tracks are careless, indulgent twaddle.)
  • Froese, Edgar. Aqua (1974) (έ) (heard 15-Aug-08; 1/5; Sound effects and doodles masquerading as music. Fraudulent!)
  • Future Sound of London, The. Lifeforms (έ) (0/5; heard 30-Aug-08; a complete waste of listening time. Was this totally improvised? Was it for an artwork?)

G

  • Gabriel, Peter. 4 (έ) (4/5; heard 19-Jun-08; Starts brilliantly and innovatively, but 'Shock the Monkey' heralds a side two of insipid 80s awfulness.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. Ovo (2000) (έ) (3/5; heard 23-Aug-08; Commissioned for the Millennium Dome for about £1m, it tries to cover too many musical styles. More melodies and less rap would have been an improvement.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. Secret World Live (έ) (4/5; heard 31-Aug-08; Noisy, and would be improved by video, but this was clearly an excellent concert; the songs are customised for stage performance.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. Shaking the Tree (έ) (5/5; heard 13-Sep-08; Hard to fault, and the re-working of 'Here Comes the Flood' is sensitive.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. So (1985) (έ) (5/5; heard 31-Aug-08; his masterpiece, and rightly his most commercially successful. Gabriel always adds to each tune, adds to the variations, adds to the musical colours, to the genographic range of instruments used.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. Up (έ) (4/5; heard 18-Jun-08; Suddenly it doesn't seem so great. The volume fluctuations on the opening track probably put off many buyers.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. Us (έ) (3/5; heard 1-Sep-08; post-So, post-Passion composition problems. The tunes just aren't good enough, and yet they form the basis of a great live act.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. 3 (έ) (3/5; heard 3-Sep-07; overrated. PG himself doesn't believe he found his groove until PG4.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. 1 (έ) (3/5; heard 9-Sep-07; OK, but I have no attachment to this. Even 'Here Comes the Flood', one of John Cale's Desert Island Discs, has a poor chorus.)
  • Gabriel, Peter. Hit (έ)
  • Gallagher, Rory. Tattoo (1974) (έ) (4/5; listened 11-Jun-07 and 12-Sep-08; simple blues but a couple of barnstormers; all the main elements are good—voice, compositions, guitar solos etc—but nothing seems great.)
  • Gaye, Martin. What's Going On (1971) (έ) (3/5; listened 15-Oct-08; measured against what we have today, only the title track stands out. But this was clearly a revolutionary achievement at the time, given what the Motown table normally produced.)
  • Gaye, Martin. The Very Best Of (έ)
  • Genesis. A Trick of the Tail (1975) (έ) (4/5; heard 22-Aug-08; Overrated largely because it was first to show Genesis could survive post-Gabriel. But no album with 'Robbery, Assault and Battery' is worth five stars. And Banks's compositions all seem to rock back and forth, as per 'Entangled'.)
  • Genesis. Archive 1967-75 (έ)
  • Genesis. Live Over Europe 2007 (έ) (heard May-08; 0/5; the most pointless live album of all time. No new solos. All tunes re-tuned to cope with Collins lowering vocal range. Collins being simultaneously menacing and embarrassing on 'Mama'.)
  • Genesis. Boxed Set—Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (έ)
  • Genesis. Boxed Set—Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot (έ)
  • Genesis. Duke (1980) (έ) (2/5; heard 1-Oct-08; one good track (Duchess) does not a decent album make. The production is an indistinct wall-of-sound.)
  • Genesis. Live (έ) (3/5; heard 3-Oct-08; Pre-Selling England and £1.99 when proper studio albums were £2.49. A poor man's greatest hits.)
  • Genesis. Seconds Out (1977) (έ)
  • Genesis. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (remastered) (1974) (έ) (5/5; heard 24-Sep-08; struggling slightly to fill two discs, but it's hard to say which tracks one would delete. Not as polished as 'Selling England', but it's a high point for the band. Was Gabriel thinking of himself as Rael?)
  • Genesis. Wind and Wuthering (έ) (heard 26-Sep-08; 3/5; Collins' Brand X dabblings bring no benefit to this mish-mash.)
  • Gentle Giant. Edge of Twilight (έ) (2/5; heard 30-Sep-08; the definition of soulless.)
  • Gentle Giant. Free Hand (1972) (έ)
  • Gentle Giant. Free Hand / Interview (1976) (έ) (3/5; heard 11-Oct-08; Soulless although undoubtedly clever. If the singer (somewhat Chapman-esque but without the gargle) had had a better voice on the rock tunes, they might have done better. The medieval material is fine. 'Free Hand' is good; 'Interview' is the bottom of the barrel.)
  • Gentle Giant. Champions of Rock (έ) (2/5; heard 22-Oct-08; valuable when few of GG's LPs were available on CD; but now almost valueless, as it focuses on the post-1976 period when GG were in US-triggered decline.)
  • Gentle Giant. In Concert (1978) (έ) (2/5; heard 20-Oct-08; well-recorded and well-played, but the track selection compared to Playing the Fool is awful, due to the 1978 timing of the concert.)
  • Gentle Giant. Out of the Woods (1975) (έ)
  • Gentle Giant. Playing the Fool (1976) (έ) (3/5; heard 20-Oct-08; worth owning for the demonstration of their musical skills, but only the recorder quartet on 'Panurge' is really spectacular.)
  • Gentle Giant. The Power and the Glory (1974) (έ)
  • Gentle Giant. In a Glass House (έ)
  • George, Lowell. Thanks I'll eat it here (έ)
  • Gold, Andrew. Never Let Her Slip Away (έ) (3/5; heard 19-Nov-08; two great hits sandwiching some very mediocre middle-of-the-road material. However Gold'svoice is of a similar pitch to mineso it's nice to be able to sing along!)
  • Golden Earring. Live (1977) (έ) (2/5; heard 25-Nov-08; so mediocre; weak, wailing 'Yeah's don't cut it. The sound is thin, despite the presence of a second lead guitar. Outside of the 'Moontan' tracks, the songs are derivative and mediocre.)
  • Golden Earring. Moontan (1973) (έ) (5/5; heard 24-Jul-07 and 18-Jun-08; Outstanding, rocky but also progressive (e.g. flute interlude on 'Big Tree').)
  • Golden Earring. Switch (1974) (έ) (3/5; heard Nov-08; such a big disappointment after Moontan. Mostly sub-Stones Jagger-esque tunes.)
  • Gong. Expresso II (1978) (έ) (3/5; heard 26-Nov-08; somewhat dependent onguest musicians, particularly Holdsworth, but better than average.)
  • Gong. Shamal (1975) (έ) (4.5/5; heard 21-July-08 and 26-Nov-08; faultless, even down to Hillage's acoustic guitar-playing. Apart from the mess-around 'Cat in Clarks Shoes'. How could this be the same band that created Camembert Electrique?)
  • Greenslade. Bedside Manners are Extra (έ) (3/5; heard 30-Dec; the Greenslade album for which I have the most affection, as it was the album promoted at their Oundle gig. But did they really need new two keyboardists??)
  • Greenslade. Greenslade (έ) (3/5; heard 28-Dec; not an album I know well, and certainly not as good as BMAE, but improving. Some fair jazzy moments, but several pointless key changes too.)
  • Greenslade. Live (1975) (έ) (1/5; heard 30-Dec; The first half (1973) is awful; the audience's applause justifiably weak.)
  • Greenslade. Spyglass Guest (έ) (3/5; heard 31-Dec; much the best-recorded of all my Greenslade's, and the addition of guitars helps, but only 'Joie de Vivre' is a stand-out melody.)
  • Groundhogs. Best 1969-72 (έ) (4/5; heard 7-Jan-09; exhilarating stuff. Why did I bother yearning for Hogwash when this has four of its best tracks?)
  • Groundhogs. Split (έ) (4/5; heard 7-Jan-09; also good if you've overdone the Bach.)
  • Groundhogs. Thank Christ for the Bomb (έ) (3/5; heard 23-Apr-08; Very low-tech instrumentation from this trio with a tinny-sounding guitar; suspect they had to play loud to impress!)
  • Groundhogs. Who Will Save the World? (1972) (έ) (3/5; heard 9-Jan-09; unexceptional and an unnecessary purchase for those with Best!)
  • Groundhogs. BBC {Live} In Concert (έ) (4/5; heard 31-Jan-08; Pretty good, and close to their best. But where is Hogwash?!)
  • Groundhogs. Hogwash (έ) (3/5; heard 11-Jan-09; Disappointing side two!)
  • Grusin, Dave. Cinemagic (1987) (έ) (2/5; heard 27-Dec-07; The Tootsie stuff is great, the rest cloying.)
  • Gryphon. Gryphon / Midnight Mushrumps (1973) (έ) (3/5; heard 9-Jan-09; unsure whether they are to challenge Gentle Giant or Steeleye Span, Gryphon seem keener to expose LZ's theft of English folk songs, such as 'The Unquiet Grave'.)
  • Gryphon. Red Queen to Gryphon Three / Raindance (1974) (έ) (2/5; heard 12-Jan-09; pleasant enough, but offered nothing new either now or then, I suspect.)

H

  • Hackett, Steve. Genesis Revisited (1996) (έ) (3/5; heard 12-Jan-09; interesting, but perhaps too wide a divergence from the original instrumentations for these versions to become classics. But I like the synclavier on 'Los Endos', and the choice of tracks is mostly excellent.)
  • Hackett, Steve. Voyage of the Acolyte (1975) (έ) (3/5; heard 12-Jan-09; perfectly pleasant, and I can see why David Pickering liked it, but nothing striking for today.)
  • Hall, Daryl and Oates, John. Abandoned Luncheonette (έ) (4/5; heard 13-Jan-09; 'Laughing Boy' has stood the test of time, and the title song is good too. 'She's Gone' now seems less good. Plenty of famous session musicians.)
  • Hall, Daryl and Oates, John. Bigger than Both of Us (έ) (4/5; heard 14-Jan-09; as per AL, some duff tracks built around catchy choruses. 'Do What You Want...' and 'Falling' are both good, and actually 'Rich Girl' is still catchy; but the verse music for 'Back Together Again' is lousy.)
  • Hall, Daryl and Oates, John. Ultimate (έ) (4/5; heard 18-Jan-09; some absolute classics (obviously), but a lot of dross too. Should have been a single CD!)
  • Hammill, Peter. A Black Box (έ) (4/5; heard 18-Jan-09; my favourite of the Hammill solo albums.)
  • Hammill, Peter. Fools Mate (1971) (έ) (2/5; heard 18-Jan-09; it may have Fripp, but I don't enjoy the tunes.)
  • Hammill, Peter. Over (έ) (4/5; heard 1-Feb-09; wonderful! The words of 'Autumn'—about children leaving the nest—are specially poignant.)
  • Hammill, Peter. The Future Now (1978) (έ) (3/5; heard 10-Mar-09; awful cover, some dud strumming music, but also several potentially interesting tracks. Must listen again.)
  • Harrison, George. All Things Must Pass (1970) (έ)
  • Hatfield and the North. Hatfield and the North (έ) (4/5; heard 1-Feb-09; Much better than I remembered, but I never knew this well. Listened to twice today!)
  • Hatfield and the North. The Rotters Club (έ) (3/5; heard 1-Feb-09; probably worse that their first. The throwaway vocal style begins to grate.)
  • Hawkwind. Doremi Fasol Latido (1972) (έ)
  • Hendrix Experience, The Jimi. Electric Ladyland (1968) (έ) (4/5; heard 1-Feb-09; a real mish-mash of material when you get past the 200% solid gold classics. I wasn't in the right mood for Jimi today.)
  • Hendrix, Jimi. The Ultimate Experience (έ) (1/5; heard 2-Feb-09; scratched and ruined, but it takes about 10 loops within Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)' to spot the perpetual return. Keep it for the CD insert and notes!)
  • Hendrix, Jimi. Experience Hendrix—The Best of (1997) (έ)
  • Hendrix, Jimi. Smash Hits (έ) (3/5; heard 2-Feb-09; the CD of the LP, and therefore somewhat brief. But nothing wrong with that. It just doesn't have any of the later stuff.)
  • Hendrix, Jimi. Are You Experienced (έ) (4/5; heard 2-Feb-09; a magnificent debut, and more consistent than any of the compilations.)
  • Henley, Don. Building the Perfect Beast (έ) (1/5; heard Feb-09; awful 80s twaddle)
  • Henry Cow. Concerts (1972) (έ) (2/5; heard Sept-09; starts well, but drifts into improv late on CD#1, continues on CD#2 and never recovers.)
  • Henry Cow. In Praise of Learning (1975) (έ) (3/5; heard 29-Aug-08; what a group of left-wing Islington school music teachers might come up with in the 1970s. Discordant, but I have some affection for this.)
  • Henry Cow. Legend (1973) (έ) (3/5; heard 5-Mar-09; more 'Hot Rats' than 'In Praise of...' but quite fun.)
  • Hillage, Steve. L (έ) (3/5; heard 5-Mar-09; dated, but a good drum sound, as a great groove on 'Hurdy Gurdy Glissando'.)
  • Hollis, Mark. Mark Hollis (έ) (3/5; heard 5-Mar-09; not as good as late-period Talk Talk.)
  • Hot Chocolate. 20 Classic Tracks (έ) (2/5; heard 6-Mar-09; strangely less soul and more Alan Parsons.)
  • Howe, Steve. Turbulence (έ) (1/5; heard 7-Mar-09; more 80s electronica nonsense.)
  • Human League. Greatest Hits (έ) (3/5; heard 7-Mar-09; actually not bad, in a tinny-with-flat-singing sort of way. Catchy!)
  • Humble Pie. Performance—Rockin' the Fillmore (έ) (3/5; heard 7-Mar-09; When the bass gets the groove, it's similar to Free. But Steve Marriott's voice is a. like Adrian Edmondson's when singing and b. very annoying when chatting to the audience!)

I

  • Isham, Mark. Songs my Children Taught Me (έ) (0/5; heard 7-Mar-09; really irritating marching music. Sell!)
  • Isham, Mark. Tibet (έ) (3/5; heard 8-Mar-09; just about listenable)
  • Isham, Mark. Vapor Drawings (έ) (3/5; heard 8-Mar-09; shades of Zawinul and Tangerine Dream.)
  • Isley Brothers, The. Forever Gold (1977) (έ) (5/5; heard 8-Mar-09; even though some of the funk tracks are so-so, the rest are magnificent and 'For the love of you' is gorgeous.)

J

  • Jackson, Janet. Damita Jo (έ) (listened 10-Mar-09; 1/5; tedious sex-oriented CD.)
  • Jackson, Janet. Rhythm Nation (έ) (listened 11-Mar-09; 2/5; not much better.)
  • Jackson, Janet. The Velvet Rope (έ) (listened 11-Mar-09; 2/5; tedious and dated.)
  • Jackson, Janet. Control (έ) (listened 11-Mar-09; 2/5; more tinny drums, but more recognisable tunes; still sounds dated and in all respects, worse than Alexander O'Neal.)
  • Jackson, Michael. History Volume 1 (έ) (listened Mar-09; 4/5; dodgy performer, great music.)
  • Jackson, Michael. Thriller (έ)*Jackson, Michael. (έ) (listened Mar-09; 5/5; dodgy performer, classic album.)
  • Jacksons, The. The Very Best of (έ) (listened Apr-09; 3/5; a good Sony-Motown collaboration, but proof that their second half was something of a decline.)
  • Jade Warrior. Elements (έ) (listened 6-Jul-09; 1/5; perhaps innovative once, but now surpassed by everything that has followed it.)
  • Japan. Tin Drum (1981) (έ) (listened May-09; 2/5; 5/5 for 'Ghosts', 0/5 for the rest!)
  • Jarre, Jean Michel. Oxygene (1976) (έ) (listened May-09; 3/5; many of the effects now seem random and pointless)
  • Jethro Tull. A Passion Play (1973) (έ) (listened May-09; 2/5; the worst Tull album I own)
  • Jethro Tull. Aqualung (1971) (έ) (listened May-09; 4/5; at least three brilliant tunes, and an informative Ian Anderson interview. But so riffy!)
  • Jethro Tull. Benefit (1970) (έ) (listened May-09; 2/5; a relatively pointless purchase if you have 'Living in the Past')
  • Jethro Tull. Living in the Past (έ) (listened May-09; 4/5; excellent intro to early Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson's puns become wearing on repetition.)
  • Jethro Tull. Minstrel in the Gallery (έ) (listened May-09; 4/5; great title track and 'Baker Street Muse' is also very good)
  • Jethro Tull. Original Masters (έ) (listened May-09; 3/5; a good selection, but the abbreviated 'TaaB' shows the LP origins of this album)
  • Jethro Tull. Stand Up (1969) (έ) (listened 7-Jul-09; 3/5; the classic Bourree and some other OK tunes)
  • Jethro Tull. Thick as a Brick (έ) (listened May-09; 3/5; overrated—side two is very repetitive.)
  • Joel, Billy. The Nylon Curtain (έ) (listened 9-July-09; 3/5; singalongable, especially 'Allentown'.)
  • Johannsson, Johann. ibm 1401, a user's manual (έ)
  • John, Elton. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975) (έ) (listened 24-Jun-09; 2/5; despite the hype at the time, most of the songs are pretty poor. Only 'Someone Saved My Life' is great.
  • John, Elton. Elton John (1970) (έ) (listened July-09; 2/5; did I listen to this?)
  • John, Elton. Goodbye Yellowbrick Road (έ) (listened 10-Oct-09; 3/5; CD#1 is much better than CD#2; not always piano-driven songs. EJ's last good album; otherwise consider him a singles artist.)
  • John, Elton. Madman across the Water (1971) (έ) (listened July-09; 2/5; Remember 'Tiny Dancer' and nothing else.)
  • Jones, Norah. come away with me (έ) (listened July-09; 3/5; despite the opening track sounding like 'Yesterday', album improves with each listen.)
  • Jones, Quincy. A&M Gold Series (έ) (listened July-09; 3/5; 'Stuff Like This' stands out.)
  • Jones, Quincy. Back on the Block (έ) (listened July-09; 2/5; dismal search for Jacko sound-alikes.)
  • Jones, Quincy. Q's Jook Joint (έ) (listened 9-July-09; 3/5; some excellent intros, and two excellent songs: 'Heaven's Girl' and 'Rock With You'.)
  • Journey. Journey's Greatest Hits (έ) (listened 13-July-09; 3/5; quintessential AOR, but only three absolute classic tracks.)

K

  • Keane. Under the Iron Sea (έ) (2/5; heard 13-Jul-09; not as mediocre as it seemed on release. Worse!)
  • Kershaw, Nik. Human Racing (έ) (1/5; heard 20-Jul-09; the quintessential one-hit wonder. How could we have been so duped?)
  • Keys, Alicia. the diary of alicia keys (έ)
  • King Crimson. Beat (1982) (έ) (3/5; heard 22-Jul-09; excellent first two tracks, loses its way, some of the old KC improv.)
  • King Crimson. Discipline (1981) (έ) (3/5; heard 13-Jul-09; not unlistenable, but just not very 2009. More 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts'.)
  • King Crimson. In the Wake of Poseidon (1970) (έ) (2/5; heard 13-Jul-09; at times, very derivative of 'Crimson King', but OK, particularly the jazzy piano (Tippett?).)
  • King Crimson. Islands (1971) (έ)
  • King Crimson. Larks Tongues in Aspic (έ) (2/5; heard 14-Jul-09; exotic prog-rock soundscape, but when would you enjoy it??)
  • King Crimson. Red (1974) (έ) (4/5; heard 16-Jul-09; outstanding, but poor sound reproduction)
  • King Crimson. Red (remastered) (έ)
  • King Crimson. Starless and Bible Black (έ) (3/5; heard 1-Aug-09; some quite tedious bits for a single LP)
  • King Crimson. The Compact King Crimson (έ)
  • King Crimson. The Night Watch (1973) (έ) (3/5; heard 20-Jul-09; OK concert recording.)
  • King Crimson. THRAK (έ) (3/5; heard 22-Jul-09; Not awful, but not remarkable either.)
  • King Crimson. USA (έ) (3/5; heard 16-Jul-09; A nice surprise, which removes the obligation to buy The Great Deceiver)
  • King, Carole. Her Greatest Hits—Songs of Long Ago (έ) (3/5; heard 22-Jul-09; tunes are OK, but the sound is muffled.)
  • Kingdom Come, Arthur Brown's. Journey (1972) (έ) (5/5; heard 22-Jul-09; unreservedly brilliant!)
  • Kinks, The. the ultimate collection (έ) (3/5; heard 27-Jul-09; some nostalgic singalong hits on CD#1, even if the same guitar riff gets over-used. CD#2 is less impressive, and Ray Davies's voice has either changed or vanished.)
  • Kitaro. Live in America (έ) (0/5; heard Aug-09; quite possibly the worst CD in my collection: insipid, awful. The Americans should NOT have encouraged him!)
  • Kolbe, Martin. White Light (έ) (2/5; heard 12-Aug-09; pleasant enough, but of a bygone new age.)
  • Kongos, John. Kongos (1971) (έ) (1/5; heard 1-Aug-09; only the two unrepresentative singles stand out; the rest is sub-Billy Joel.)
  • Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu, Rabbit. Kossoff Kirke Tetsu Rabbit (έ) (3/5; heard 1-Aug-09; could have been a lot worse. Only the singing is mediocre. The guitar-playing is great.)
  • Kossoff, Paul. Koss (έ) (2/5; heard 11-Aug-09; good guitar, of course, but poor songs. Only 'Time Away', composed with John Martyn, is interesting.)
  • Kraftwerk. The Mix (έ) (3/5; heard 22-Jun-08; nicely remastered (re-recorded?) but many of the tunes are unexceptional.)
  • Kraftwerk. Trans-Europe Express (έ) (2/5; heard 8-Aug-09; inferior in every way to The Mix.)

L

  • Led Zeppelin. BBC Sessions (έ) (listened 11-Aug-09; 2/5; shows how polished the studio albums were. CD#2 is much the more accomplished and listenable.)
  • Led Zeppelin. Houses of the Holy (έ) (listened 11-Aug-09; 3/5; still as uneven and varied as ever.)
  • Led Zeppelin. How the West was Won (έ)
  • Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin (έ) (5/5; heard 13-Aug-09; a brilliant arrival -- hear those sound effects in 'Dazed and Confused'!)
  • Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin II (έ) (listened 12-Aug-09; 4/5; the whole construction of 'Whole Lotta Love' is magnificent.)
  • Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin III (έ) (4/5; heard 13-Aug-09; 'Hangman' and 'Immigrant Song' are still brilliant.)
  • Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin IV (έ) (2/5; heard 14-Aug-09; 'Stairway to Heaven' and The Levee' aside, the most overrated rock album of all time. LZ were clearly running out of good riffs.)
  • Led Zeppelin. Physical Graffiti (1975) (έ) (listened 14-Jun-07 and 19-Aug-09; 5/5; patchy on sides 3 and 4, but the album is such an epic that it is hard to make significant criticisms. The strongest double LP of all time?)
  • Led Zeppelin. Remasters (έ) (5/5; heard 2-Sep-09; Impossible to criticise, but the tracks sit better in their original album settings.)
  • Lindisfarne. The Best of (έ) (listened 21-Aug-09; 1/5; they broke up after three albums and deservedly so: they couldn't sing, and they only wrote two good tunes: Lady Eleanor and Meet Me on the Corner.)
  • Little Feat. As Time Goes By (1986) (έ) (heard Aug-09; 4/5; impossible to criticise the track selection, but they sit better on their original albums.)
  • Little Feat. Dixie Chicken (1973) (έ) (heard 24-Aug-09; 5/5; every track is excellent in a Southern boogie sense. But On Your Way Down and Juliette also deserve to be universal pop classics.)
  • Little Feat. Feats Don't Fail Me Now (1974) (έ) (heard 5-Sep-09; 3/5; The Feat's party album. Good for a singalong, but apart from the sublime groove of 'Spanish Moon', this is unremarkable stuff.)
  • Little Feat. Hoy-Hoy! (έ) (heard 1-Sep-09; 2/5; unremarkable post-mortem selection of unreleased tracks.)
  • Little Feat. Let it Roll (έ)
  • Little Feat. Little Feat (1971) (έ) (heard 2-Sep-09; 2/5; it may be a cult LP, but can I be bothered to get into it? Were LF pointlessly whacky?)
  • Little Feat. Sailin' Shoes (1972) (έ) (heard 2-Sep-09; 3/5; a big improvement on the first album.)
  • Little Feat. The Last Record Album (1975) (έ) (heard 3-Sep-09; 5/5; Little Feat's final masterpiece.)
  • Little Feat. Time Loves a Hero (1977) (έ) (heard 5-Sep-09; 2/5; unremarkable, apart from 'Day at the Dog Races', which is no jazzy that it bears no similarity to the original George-led Little Feat.)
  • Little Feat. Waiting for Columbus (έ)
  • Lofgren, Nils. The Best of—Don't Walk, Rock (έ) (listened Oct-09; 2/5; disappointing; I now feel that in the 1970s we were taken in!)
