NCR Teradata has rolled out an energy efficient version of its 5500 Server data warehousing platform which it claims used 75% less power.

The Dayton, Ohio-based company said the new server will "green" Teradata's traditionally large enterprise data warehousing implementations.

Scott Gnau, senior vice president and chief development officer, said the reduction in electricity savings returned by a single server is enough to power 40 homes for a year. "In addition the 5500 Server reduces the [data center] floor space requirement by approximately 66%."

He added that energy savings are also accrued from a 30% drop in cooling costs because of the server's cabinet design.

Teradata's 5500 Server, which leverages Intel Dual Core 5100 processors, is slots into Teradata's Warehouse 8.2 platform and is designed to scale up to multi-petabyte-class data warehouses.
