HP meets 1B pound recycling goal (13-Jul-07)

Having met its goal six months early to recycle 1 billion pounds (lbs) of electronics, HP said it has set a new target to recycle another billion pounds by the end of 2010. For those concerned that the materials recovered are being reused in HP computers, HP said that plastics and metals retrieved from recycled products have been used to make a range of new products, including car parts, clothes hangers, plastic toys, fence posts, serving trays and roof tiles.

HP appears to be outperforming their targets with regards to recycling; in 2007 they reached the goal of recycling 1 billion pounds of electronics six months early, thus the corporation have now set a new target of another billion pounds by the end of 2010. This shows clear evidence of HP tackling “green issues” in a proactive manner; this is a technique that needs to be pursued by more companies in order to make a real change to the environment.

Having met its goal six months early to recycle 1 billion pounds of electronics, Hewlett-Packard Co. said Friday it set a new target for another billion pounds by the end of 2010.

Palo Alto-based HP (NYSE:HPQ) set its initial goal in 2004 after it had reached the half billion pound mark, then went on to recycle a further half billion pounds in the next three years.

"Environmental responsibility is good business," said Mark Hurd, HP chairman and chief executive officer. "We've reached the tipping point where the price and performance of IT are no longer compromised by being green, but are now enhanced by it."

In 2006, HP said it recovered 187 million pounds of electronics globally.

HP said plastics and metals recovered from recycled products have been used to make a range of new products, including auto body parts, clothes hangers, plastic toys, fence posts, serving trays and roof tiles.
