BRUSSELS, Oct. 10, 2007 -- The European Union wants to help small and medium companies become more environmentally friendly in order to tackle climate change.

The EU will do this through a program that dedicate funds to simplifying environmental management system access, finance support networks and promote awareness for a sector that often has little idea of its environmental impact.

According to the EU, small and medium-sized companies don't know what impact their business have on the environment until they are told otherwise. The EU's 23 million such companies represent about 99 percent of all businesses and nearly 60 percent of the total economy value.

"To successfully tackle the environmental challenges we face and to achieve our targets on greenhouse emissions, renewable energy and energy efficiency, all European companies must be on board," said Stavros Dimas, EU commissioner for the environment. "Small and medium-sized companies are an integral part of Europe's economy and it is therefore vital that they play their part in making the European economy more sustainable."

The EU will fund the program with $5 million Euro through 2013. Already this year, it will publish a book of funding opportunities, as well as guide on energy efficiency, air emissions, soil, water and waste.
