Concept of Kuithne

From Kuithne

A brainstorm for kuithne:

Themes

  • No good/evil dichotomy.
  • The world revolves through world cycles that are 'themed' by special characteristics. World cycles are more than just the rise and fall of an empire, but of an entire cycle of civilization. A handful or has passed so far.
  • Free-for-all fantasy. There's no set 'classic' conventions to abide by in making things up.
  • Magic is heavily integrated into the world and widely used. Everybody has some touch of magic over them.
  • diversity: There exists great diversity of races and cultures.
  • knowledge: The 'known world' is well known and extensive. It trades off the general sense of fantasy mystery for immersion in an everyday fantastical setting.
  • some kind of cosmic order sets the agenda for everyone in the setting. Possibilities include a 'canticle' like understanding of the world, essence being tied to the land and particular flavours.

Ideas

  • Elves are descendents of the phaerie who preferred civilization over the wilds. They are not the sylvan people of classical fantasy, but a very lawful, regimented and discplinary society.
  • Humans are NOT the dominant race. Possibly the most common minority outside their own lands, but as a default there is no dominant race on a setting wide scale.
  • regions where particular races dominate or compete for dominance.
  • words of power. See magic section.
  • Archetypes - do certain archetypes have inherent power?
