Tribal DDB I picked this agency because they are not leading the pack but making their own waves for the future of advertising--especially in the digital field. They think one step of the curve, and that is the key to success in the future of advertising.

TAXI When large media companies are dissing the agencies and claiming its all about media placement, and advertising agencies are no longer and wont be needed in the future, TAXI, believes in the media-neutral approach--"if you make it, they will buy" attitude. This may seem to some as backwards, but if the future of advertising is in being innovative, agencies like TAXI must find a way to get around the so called "end" of agencies, and TAXI is taking those steps.

Strawberry Frog This agency really focuses on the culture aspect to get successful work done. Not only do they follow and adhere to culture, but they are shaping culture as well. However, Strawberry Frog is doing so, responsibly, not only to make a profit, but an everlasting impression. Retrieved from "http://editthis.info/innovationclass/User_talk:RemmyKaya"

I picked these specific articles because i really related to them from not only personal experience, but i have thought about both of these issues beforehand on my own--so it was nice to see others were thinking the way i was.

On the Back of a Turtle I see a City

In this excerpt, Jamie Lerner relates a turtle shell as the foundation of what would make a perfect city. Lerner describes how each separate component of the shell in a way unifies it as to make it one efficient, compact functioning entity. He goes on to say how there is really no need for anything outside this shell, since everything is already present, and all the components are there, the sprawling suburbs we see so much these days are actually breaking up cities and making them segregated and less efficient. This article is more so about sustainability and what a city needs to support itself, and all one needs to do is look within itself and not try to acquire success or support by sprawling. This is a very thought invoking article, because it really makes us look at not only how we are living, but how we expect to live, and what we're doing to the environment and economy as a result. Really good, innovative perspective--Lerner even includes his turtle shell depiction in a drawing! Below are the two articles i picked to discuss from the HBR breakthrough ideas of 2008.

My Blackberry ate my Accountability

This article basically discusses how innovation in technology has become the scapegoat for lack of attention and responsibility. In this article, Lew McCreary discusses how cell phones, Blackberry's, and PDA's, have become the "my dog ate me homework excuse for adults." Because people nowadays are constantly bombarded with technological interruptions--whether it be email, mobile calls, or text messages--either due to the inability to multi-task, lack of time, or just plain aware unconsciousness or desire to reply, they seem to more often than not, not take responsibility for missed or misinterpreted communication. This article is really insightful and really relates to an experience i had this summer at my internship. My team would be in a conference call either discussing project schedules or time sheets, and it seemed like all the information would have to be repeated once but two or three times during the course of the call, just so the "listeners" could take time to "listen" to the information--instead of texting, email, and/and instant messaging on the side. A phone conference scheduled to take 30 minutes at the max, would end up lasting over an hour--and this was every time, not just for one phone conference.

2/14 Class Summary We arranged the room today in a way where each team could use a part of the whiteboard. Also, its easier to work with things when easier to see them. Each group picked a team name. However, we couldn¢â¬â¢t agree if this was the most useful setup because we never got a chance to use the boards. We¢â¬â¢re going to try again on Thursday¢â¬â¢s class, and then make a decision.

There were some problems realized with the Yahoo group. There seem to be too many posts at one time, and a few people are having problems logging in. Therefore, we have decided to move onto starting the wiki. Jesse Munson became the ¢â¬wiki¢â¬ master. On Tuesday, we¢â¬â¢re going to do a quick wiki tour to get everyone acclimated to the process.

We continued our discussion on the companies we chose from the top 100 list of innovative companies. We talked a little about TiVo and how we individually use it¢â¬"realized it¢â¬â¢s a ¢â¬control¢â¬ thing¢â¬" TiVo is about control of your time and basically a recombination of VHS/ hard drive. Vudu was introduced¢â¬"it¢â¬â¢s a hard drive. Similar to Netflix but don¢â¬â¢t have to wait for delivery. Vudu is about impulses¢â¬"for example if you want to watch a movie right this second, you don¢â¬â¢t have to wait for the mail like Netflix, unlike OnDemand, you can save the movies, and unlike rentals, you can keep the movies forever if you buy them. This is an example of a distribution innovation.

We came up with one workable definition of innovation: ¢â¬a development that totally changes the game.¢â¬

We added another idea to the Manifesto: ¢â¬Follow the idea not the leader.¢â¬

Talked a little bit about the start and cultural impact of the Sears Catalog.

We talked about how a business model innovation has a lot to do with the company¢â¬â¢s culture.

One of the biggest problems of innovation is to finish or complete the project¢â¬"much like trying to keep rearranging our classroom to fit our needs.

HW: Research IDEO over the weekend, ideo.com, and next week, we are going to build our own model of IDEO.

I of course have to go with the number one most innovative company¢â¬"and that is Apple. They are a company that keeps everyone of its users as well as non-users as to what they will come up with next¢â¬"I mean how many companies can say that. For example, everyone is wondering what the next iPhone is going to look like, but who really cares what model laptop Dell is going to come out with next?

http://www.tuaw.com/ This blog mainly discusses the updates on apple software that have recently been put out or are due out in the near future¢â¬"it keeps consumers guessing as to what will come next. Like I mentioned before, I like this site because it updates consumers on gadgets/software due out and what we can look forward to.

http://www.crazyapplerumors.com/ This blog is basically just what it says¢â¬"people just make up hilarious and false rumors about the company encompassing every area, whether it be software related, company related, or Steve Jobs related. It is a load of gaggles to read, kind of a pointless but entertaining way to spend your time.

http://blogs.computerworld.com/microsoft_succumbs_to_apple_envy_buys_danger This one is posted by a guy who is a seeming computer freak, and waits for his readers to respond to his posts. I like this one because people really chime in, unscaved to take on a smart guy. Also there is a cool little innovation comment dissing Microsoft¢â¬â¢s lack of innovative ability¢â¬"really applies to this class.

http://keithshank.blogspot.com/2008/02/bad-apple.html We know everyone doesn¢â¬â¢t love apple, even if they are all amazed by its innovative abilities. This blog includes some downsides with apple as a company and a service provider¢â¬"I like it for its other viewpoint, we don¢â¬â¢t get to hear about.

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080211/BLOG01/80211020/&imw=Y This one is concerned with a competitor to the iPhone-the Gphone. Its Google¢â¬â¢s version of a new-tech breed of cell phones, and it¢â¬â¢s directly aimed at wiping out the competition head on. Its being unveiled in Barcelona, so im sure its getting way more buzz in Europe but its exciting to see what the reaction will be, when the public sees it for the first time.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/blog/story.cfm?c_id=1501198&objectid=10492023 This blog is almost a separate response to the blog listed above¢â¬"it talks about the unveiling of the Gphone. I like it when I get answers to my questions and this blog does just that, answers the question asked in the above blog.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2249284,00.asp This one is a live blog of Steve Job¢â¬â¢s keynote speech from this year¢â¬â¢s Macworld Expo. The author types a few outlining key ideas, but there is also a link, if you are interested in following the speech live and as it happens¢â¬"wow a link from a blog to watch a live streaming video? Now that¢â¬â¢s cool¢â¬"not to mention it¢â¬â¢s from a reputable site.

http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/97361 This blog actually sites a blog I listed at the top of the list as one of its sources for information. I was confused to see that this blog actually drives away readers to the other blog site instead of encapsulating them in their own words. Kind of an oxymoron, interesting¢â¬¦

http://ipodapplemac.blogspot.com/2007/12/analysis-many-faces-of-apple.html This one really relates to our industry because it gives an overview of Apple's advertising and its evolution. I knew of 1984 but there are a couple in here that are interesting as well.

http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2008/02/steve_jobs_rule.html This one is another blog about Apple advertising, but also as how it relates to how music is sold now a days. It gives an overview of this issue by linking it to the top song sold on iTunes¢â¬"and why it is the top dog it is. For users of iTunes, and music in general, this is an interesting thought.

Innovative Organizaitonal Structure

How many of you have ever been in a supermarket and instead of waiting in a line that seemed to go nowhere, you have left everything and gone home? Well, my innovation idea will fix just that. Not only will this proposed idea be beneficial for the shoppers, but the business as well.

9 am, 1pm, even if it is 12 am, seems like there is always a line at the supermarket. Doesn't matter what you're buying--if it be shopping for the week or just buying a box of cookies you had a craving for that night, there is no getting around those horrendous and annoying grocery lines. When finally the clerk does recognize the need for extra help up-front, he/she does so by slowing down the one line there only is anyway, then makes a phone call, and finally the clerk along with everyone else who is even madder by this point has to wait until that person takes their time to get there.

You would think, during this age of technology, grocery stores would have solved the problem of inefficient and long lines. My proposed idea, would take advantage of technology to update this problem. Instead of waiting for one clerk to recognize the need for additional help with only the use of their eyesight, i propose to have cameras for the sole purpose to identify the need for more help at the registers.

These cameras would be manned behind the scenes by a clerk monitor. As soon as the need was identified, all available employees would be notified by a signal or beeper that would urge them to get up front. The "need" would be determined by the time and day of the situation. For example, there wouldn't be a need for that many clerks in the middle of the night on a wednesday--but probably more would be needed during the day on a sunday--when most people do their weekly shopping.

In order to make sure that not every employee ran up to the front at the same time, the person in charge of monitoring the cameras would make an executive decision as to how many employees would be needed up front--and if possible, call out by name the employees need to help out.

By means of a two way radio, a call would be sent out so all employees would hear the request but only those named would be required to come up front. In order to determine which employee had to come and help, everyday there would be a "help-sheet" (similar to a work schedule) to ensure all employees were aware if they were on the list of helping out beside their routine responsibilities for that day.

Some kinks would need to be worked out as all things are when first implemented in a business, but i think overtime this could help ease the line problem at supermarkets.
