The School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics at UQ has a reputation for innovative approaches to teaching and research excellence. The School’s dynamic team of thirty-six academic staff members are widely published internationally and have extensive research backgrounds. The School is regarded as a leader in humanities teaching and research in Australia and attracts a large cohort of undergraduate and postgraduate students.


The School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics is seeking an outstanding appointee who is an energetic and innovative scholar interested in building research and teaching synergies across the Discipline and School in Southeast Asian History. This is a long-established teaching field within the School, and the University Library is extremely strong in this area. The appointee will report to the Head of the School.


The successful candidate should hold a PhD in Southeast Asian History and have a solid record of academic leadership, teaching and research. Applicants at Senior Lecturer level will be expected to have more advanced skills in these areas than applicants at Lecturer level, and be experienced in postgraduate supervision and administration. The candidate should have wide expertise in Asian history and be a specialist in Southeast Asian history. It is essential that the successful candidate be able to make teaching and research connections to contemporary Islam in Southeast Asia, and have an interest, at least at a teaching level, in the history of the Middle East and the wider Islamic world. The ability to create links to other disciplines within the School would be an advantage. Proven success in obtaining external funding is desirable, particularly at Senior Lecturer level.


This is a continuing, full-time appointment at Academic Level B or C, depending on qualifications and experience. The remuneration package will be a base salary range from $72,388 to $85,960 per annum (Academic Level B), or $88,675 to $102,248 per annum (Academic Level C), plus employer superannuation contributions of 17%.
