Strange reflection on sand

From the game Super Mario Sunshine for the Nintendo Gamecube

Go onto that little island in Delfino Plaza where the depressed guy is/was. Stand on the top, or near the top of the fire (if it's lit, first put it out). Squirt water on the sand. You should see in the water either a stretched out picture of Mario, a picture of the opposite side of Mario (if you were facing forward, the reflection would show your back), or a reflection of two Marios joined together facing different ways. Not only are the reflections strange, but sand shouldn't be able to give you a reflection in the first place.
