Delayed drowning from fire

From the game Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64.

Go to the Vanish Cap level. Now go to the bottom of that big hill near one of the fire spitters. Damage yourself until you have 3 or fewer life pieces. Let the fire spitter damage you and as you are slowly losing life, run off the edge. You will appear in the outside water because you died, but if you did it properly, you will have no life pieces because the firespitter took them all. Now since you have no life, you will drown. It's strange. This happens because the programmers didn't let you lose lives in mid-air!
