  • Earth once had ten suns circling it, each taking a turn to illuminate it.
  • One day, all ten suns appeared at once, scorching the earth.
  • The earth was saved by a strong, tyrannical archer who succeeded in shooting down nine of the suns.
  • One day, the archer's wife drinks a life elixir taken from a goddess and saves the people from the archer's rule.
  • After drinking it, she flew to the moon.
  • The archer loved his wife so much he didn't shoot down the moon.

[edit] The Man

  • The man was shiftless, changing his apprenticeships all the time.
  • One day he decided to become immortal.
  • He went to live in the mountains where he begged an immortal to teach him.
  • The immortal taught him to use herbs to cure sickness.
  • After three days, the man's restlessness kicked in and he asked the immortal to teach him something different.
  • So the immortal taught him something else.
  • The man's restlessness kicks in all the time, after which the immortal gives him books of immortality to study.
  • He of course becomes bored again and asked to travel some place new and exciting.
  • Finally angered with the man's impatience, he banished the man to the moon palace telling him he must cut down a (some kind of huge tree) before he could return to earth.
  • Though he chopped day and night, the magical tree restored itself after each blow, and thus the man is still there, chopping.

[edit] The Hare

  • Fairy sages transform themselves into old men and beg for something to eat froma a fox, a mnonkey and a rabit. The fox and monkey both had food to offer them, but the rabbit, empty-handed, offered his own flesh instead, jumping into the fire to cook himself.
  • The sages were so touched by the rabbit's sacrifice, they let him live in the moon palace where he became the "Jade Rabbit."

[edit] The Moon Cake

  • The previous leaders of tribe now tyrranized were unhappy with their oppression, and began how to coordinate the rebellion in secrecy.
  • Knowing that the Moon Festival was drawing near, they made special cakes.
  • Baked into each cake was a message with the outline of the attack. On the night of the festival, they successfully overthrew the government, followed by a legendary era.
  • The cakes are eaten to this day to commemorate this legend.
