[edit] Pre-Deployed Maps

Pre-deployed maps are some of the trickiest maps to create. The nature of Battalion makes it a defensive game, and many pre-deployed maps lend to playing extremely defensively. This results in a really boring game where the player who takes the initiative is often punished and ultimately defeated. In crafting a pre-deployed map, one must create a map where there is incentive to break out from the starting encampment and yet with multiple ways to do this. In addition, it’s a bad idea to give a player a lot of artillery in a pre-deployed map, since those units encourage defense even more. Try giving each player a large percentage of attacking units, such as scorpions, STATs and Gunships while giving only a few or no mortars and AT Arrays.

Pre-deployed maps allow for a lot of creativity on the map creator’s part. They are a chance to bring otherwise neglected units into the spotlight, since cost is not an issue and there are no reinforcements. Buildings, terrain, and non-attacking units such as transports can all be used in unique ways that would not normally occur in the main game.
