In my experience, the best maps result from sitting down beforehand and thinking about exactly what I want to accomplish with the map. While this is not the case for everyone, I feel that if you know exactly what the overall plan for your map is, things will come together much better. Before you start designing, think about the general type of map you’re going to make. How many players will it be? Will it be pre-deployed or will you be able to build units? Will it be team based? What is the overall play style that I’m going for in this map? Are there any interesting tricks in map making that I can design this map around? Will this be a premium map or a conventional map.

With an idea of what the overall theme of the map will be, designing and balancing it will be much easier.
