Take plots from favorite ST episodes... go down the list of them at some point, but one that comes to mind is "Future Imperfect" - where Riker is knocked out on an away mission and regains conciousness to an aging Dr. Crusher - finding that he is 16 yeras in the future, with a very different reality. Use this kind of plot in the story, maybe an entire novel - this will serve to give character development as he sees the future, all the things that didn't go how he wanted, all the people who have died, all the massive changes the world has gone through, etc.

For this story, make the time travel be very ambiguous... have it happen at an ancient location, a city or a very far away place not touched by humans in millenia. Make it a location that is described as being a place where "time simply doesn't work right". Explanation would be that it is the focus of the convergence of the current, where the power that flows through the world is driven, the driving force, central location where all time and current converges. Time works differently there (possibly make it in the middle of the ocean on a small island, in the middle of the "burmuda triangle" in the ocean that has prevented people from finding the lost continents of the east)... and the current can be used there by anyone... and the area has a number of other unique properties. None the less, being that time doesn't work the same there, it would likely respond to the thoughts of any inhabitents, and that future or past will be shaped by their mind. The future they see isn't necessarily the future that will happen, but often times it is. Explore this concept and really hash it out and perfect it.

It might be referred to as a "gateway" and could serve as the convergence of time on the planet (ie the dark platform on Chrono Trigger for example). Maybe it isn't as unpredictable as my previous explanation - perhaps it is a point on the planet where one can exist outside time and manipulate it, much like the gods do. Perhaps allow communication with the gods here, or whatever. Yes - make this the time platform. I love this - big time novel idea.

Also - For the Chrono Trigger Time Travel novel - also consider the possibility of a repeating set of days (a la Majoras mask) - where the protagonist FAILS repeatedly... and must travel back in time to the beginning and do it correctly. Each time he tries to change the path, he fails, and must ultimately figure it out or some massive doom happens. Could be a time paradox type of thing - we'll see. Just an idea.

COULD go with a somewhat technological thing here... think of several video games and technology still existing in the "medieval" world... links electric/metal boots, chrono trigger... Mana fortress, Symphonia...
