Nancy was born May 22, 1950 to Dorothy and Sam Elia. It was a happy day for her-- but not, from what she was later told, for her sister Kathy. When arriving home from the hospital Kathy wasn't too sure of her little sister Nancy, but quickly warmed up to her and everything between the two sisters is very special.

Nancy and Kathy spent a lot of time at Grandma and Grandpa Elia's especially when they were younger and would go there after school. Grandma Elia would try to teach then Italian but to no avail. Saturday nights were special because the girls would spend the night with them and have steak and the best fried potatoes in the world (to this day no one can make potatoes like Grandma Elia). After dinner, Nancy remembers the family would watch Gunsmoke and have tea and popcorn. Angela and Michele Barbarossa would spend time there too and the girls would play operator on the middle bed and Aunt Mary would always have to tell them to be quiet. Nancy says, "We always thought she was hard of hearing!" "Operator" was a game the girls invented where they pretended to make phone calls through an operator's switchboard to one another in the upstairs of Grandma Elia's house.

Another childhood memory for Nancy was that Sunday dinners were always fun sitting around the table with all the family. Normally, Kathy and Nancy couldn't have soda pop but on Sundays Grandma Elia always gave it to them at lunch time so it was a treat.

Nancy will always remember playing with Charlie and Theresa Elia in the back yard. Nancy became a real good catcher thanks to Charlie but ended up having a sore hand a lot of the time. Theresa and Nancy did have many exciting adventures together too numerous to mention. The railroad tracks do come to mind! And of course who can forget Aunt Theresa's lemon pie! Nancy says that "growing up on Clinton Street was the best and having such a great family around all the time was very special-- we are truly lucky to have such a great family."

On October 25, 1975 Nancy married Steven Benton. They had met on a blind date through mutual friends in Rochester, New York. Shortly after they were married Steve's job took them to Colorado where they lived for almost a year. Nancy wasn't real happy living there so they bought a dog named Boomer to keep her company while Steve traveled. A job offer came along for Steve and the Bentons were off to Chicago and settled in Naperville and lived there for almost 12 years. On October 1, 1982, Matthew Richard was born and seventeen months later on March 2, 1984, Melissa Kathleen was born. In 1989 the Bentons moved back to upstate New York to be near family and to raise their children.

Steven Benton

Steve Benton was born on February 16, 1950 to Richard and Marjorie Benton in Norwich, New York. He is the oldest of 3 boys: Steve, Mark and Russell. Even though he was born in Norwich, like Nancy, the two didn't meet until several years later. Steve moved to Horseheads, New York, graduated from high school, and then went on to Rochester Institute of Technology in 1973 earning a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Cousin Steven St. John fondly remembers visiting the Bentons in Chicago when he was a young boy. Steve Benton, at the time, had one of the first personal computers: a Texas Instruments. He showed his young cousin the computer, and the two of them programmed a little "guess my number" program together in BASIC. It wasn't long after that Steven got his own Texas Instruments computer, and it is not too much of a stretch to say that that interlude probably led to Steve's fascination with computers leading even to the creation of the Elia Family websites.
