Early Life

Marie was born on November 2, 1942 in Oswego, NY to Anthony and Rose Elia. The oldest of two, Marie was later joined by her younger brother, Anthony, Jr. Marie grew up in Oswego, except for two years during World War II, when Tony was in the Navy and Rose and Marie lived with Rose’s sister and brother-in-law, Frances and John Paino, in Norwich, NY. Marie was always an excellent student and graduated from Oswego Catholic High in 1960. She then entered Nazareth College in Rochester, NY where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 1964.

Adulthood

Before her senior year in college she met Dave Patchin through his sister Joyce. The two quickly fell in love and were married on June 6, 1964 right after Marie graduated from Nazareth. After a brief stint of living on the farm in Germantown, NY, Marie and Dave moved to Norwich, NY in the Fall of 1964. Marie started as a registered nurse at Chenango Memorial Hospital. Marie and Dave soon became the proud parents of three, David in 1965, Kristin in 1967, and Timothy in 1969. Marie continued to work as a nurse and also trained younger nurses through a BOCES training program. During the early 70’s Marie changed positions and accepted a teaching position at Morrisville College in the Nursing School. Looking to expand her career, Marie entered Binghamton University’s Robert Wood Johnson Licensed Nurse Practitioner program. She graduated from the school in 1980 and became among the first Nurse Practitioners in the country. This designation allowed her to perform many of the tasks previously only given to physicians such as examinations and prescribing and administering medicine. With her new degree in hand, Marie was hired as the health administrator for the New Berlin, NY School District, where her students and the staff loved her.

Marie loved her family deeply and was always interested and involved in all aspects of her husbands and children’s lives. She enjoyed cross-country skiing with the family and running with her friend, Nancy Roberts. Marie was an excellent cook, with an expertise in Italian food. Marie’s manicotti was well known throughout her circle of friends. Marie was close with all of the Elia, Natoli, and Patchin family members and often put together 20-30 person dinners at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Marie always made sure that her family knew that they were loved and cared for. Marie passed away on January 23, 1983. She is always loved and deeply missed by her family.

David Ward Patchin

Dave was born on September 3, 1940 in Germantown, NY to Lester and Stella Patchin. The oldest of four, Dave was soon joined by his sister Joyce, brother Jim, and sister Ginger. He grew up on a dairy farm and as he became older eventually ran the day-to-day operations of the family business. Dave was also musically talented and played trumpet in the Germantown High School Band. Dave graduated from Germantown High in 1958 and entered Cornell University’s College of Agriculture, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture in 1962.

After college graduation Dave went back to run the family farm in Germantown. His sister Joyce was going to school in Rochester at the time and had met Marie Elia during nursing school classes. Thinking they would be a good match, Joyce introduced Marie to her brother Dave. Marie and Dave became close quickly and were engaged and married within 13 months of meeting each other. After their wedding on June 6, 1964, the couple briefly moved to Germantown where Dave continued to run the farm. However, looking for a new opportunity, Dave found a new job as a loan officer in the Agricultural Credit department of The National Bank and Trust Company of Norwich. Dave and Marie moved to an apartment on Cortland Street in Norwich, NY in the Fall of 1964. The couple quickly outgrew the apartment with the impending arrival of David and moved to King Settlement Road. After Kristin’s arrival in 1967 and Tim on the way, the family moved to Warner Road in 1969 and then to 67 South Broad Street in 1977.

During his time at the Bank, Dave progressed quickly up the ranks and reached the position of Vice President and Branch Division Head for NBT’s retail branch network. He was also the head of the City of Norwich’s Planning Commission, a member of Rotary, and a member of the Lost Pond Club. Dave also graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers.

Dave was the consummate family man and loved being together with the family as much as possible. He enjoyed golf, cross-country skiing, and also running. He was always upbeat and could always make you smile, even when you thought you never would! Dave passed away on January 23, 1983 and continues to be deeply loved and missed by his family.
