Electrosphere:Images and Media

From Electrosphere

Community Portal

The new Electrosphere comes with a lot of new features, not the least of which is the ability to upload images directly onto the wiki. This feature will make life easier for many a user of this wiki, but it is important to follow a few guidelines when uploading images. Herein contained is a quick reference guide to uploading images.

Contents

[edit] How to Upload

Uploading an image to the Electrosphere is very easy to do. In the toolbox on the left hand side is a link labeled "Upload file". Click this link to start the process. After following the link, the Upload file page will appear with a Source filename field, a Destination filename field, and a Summary field. The Source filename is the local location of the file on your computer. The Destination filename is the name the file will have on Electrosphere. The Summary field is some text that will appear on the image's description page. Once these fields have all been filled in, clicking the "Upload file" button will upload the file to the wiki.

[edit] What to Upload

[edit] File Usage

The Electrosphere is not an image host. Images hosted on the Electrosphere should be used in several pages on the Electrosphere. If an image is only going to be used on a single wiki page (or none), then it would be better if you hosted the image yourself on a photobucket account or similar service.

[edit] File Type

Currently, the Electrosphere only supports the upload of images in formats JPEG, GIF, and PNG, and only supports the upload of other media in OGG Vorbis and OGG Theora formats.

  • JPEG - JPEG format should be used for photographic images
  • GIF - GIF format should be used for animated, non-photographic images
  • PNG - PNG format should be used for static, non-photographic images
  • OGG Vorbis - OGG Vorbis format should be used for audio
  • OGG Theora - OGG Theora format should be used for video, with or without audio

It is important to pick the proper format for several reasons. First, files in the wrong format may be much larger than necessary. For example, photographs saved in PNG format are about ten times the size of a JPEG version. Second, certain compression algorithms can distort images. For example, non-photographic images stored in JPEG format contain distortions known as artifacts, making the image more difficult to view and to edit.

[edit] What to Name

The name of the file is very important for users trying to determine content based on a list of file names. The basic content of a file should be discernable from the name of that file, so map files should contain "map", and where the map represents, in the name.

[edit] What to Summarize

[edit] File Content

The file summary should contain a longer description of the file content. This description should be as simple, succinct, and accurate as possible. Necessary legend information should be placed into the description if such information is not in the file itself. Also, links to other relevant files or articles should also be included in the description. This is not a list of articles that use the image. Such a list is automatically generated elsewhere on an image's page.

[edit] File License

The summary of an image should describe the license the file is released under. Most files on the Electrosphere would likely be released under a Creative Commons license, or other form of semi-free license. Releasing media under such a license allows other user to make improvements and derivative works of value. Just because the majority of files will be released under such licenses, users can release their original works under whatever license they please.

[edit] File Citation

Files that are not original works of a Electrosphere user should have their original sources cited. Examples of these types of files are images from the actual games. Users should identify which game and its mission or cutscene that the image came from, or if it is from one of Namco's official websites or an image made by another user on The Electrosphere.
