If you don't know what an Alt-Mode is, how did you find this comic? Anyway, Alt-modes are alternate forms that Cybertronians can change their bodies into. Typically this is for transportation or profession. Popular choices in terms of getting around include tetrajets, shuttles, and ground based vehicles. Popular profession based Alt-modes include microscopes, communications equipment, and the odd weapon or two in the military. There are also organic based Alt-modes, sometimes covered in SynthFlesh, sometimes not.

It's not known when the practice and technology was developed, as that is part of Cybertron's forgotten past.
