You stop and listen. That's definitely the sound of a vehicle, and it's close by.

The vehicle slows, then apparently comes to a halt, although you can still hear the engine running.

You cautiously move a little bit closer. Still, the only thing you can hear is the engine idling.

You get closer still. The noise of the engine suddenly stops, like someone has just turned it off.

You hold still. There's a faint "thump", like some object just hit the ground. Then silence.
