You've worked for city services before, so before long, you have your boss, Mr Longwood, on the phone.
”Thanks for stepping up on such a short notice,” he says. ”We're chronically short of staff, so I'm forced to hand you a difficult assignment, despite your lack of credentials.
”We've had any number of complaints over the years against Fuk Me Hod, the Chinese greasepot down by the docks. Its license has expired twice over. But it's a dangerous, sleazy neighborhood, so my regular staff have refused the job altogether and the previous temps we've sent have all resigned, if we heard back from them at all, that is.
”Your job is to inspect the premises for hygiene protocol violations. Keeping food on heat for days on end, employees not washing their hands, vermin excrement not being cleaned away on regular basis, that sort of thing. In short, you either give them a pass or a fail.
”Before you accept the assignment, Miss...” Mr Longwood trails off.
”Yes?” you interject.
”Harbor District is... not upscale,” he says. ”Don't rely on the cops to come save you. In fact, you should consider abandoning the mission if you feel sufficiently threatened. Of course, such an outcome would necessitate striking you off my shortlist. You would become just another unreliable temp worker we would no longer want to work for us.
“On the other hand, succeed and a permanent position might just open up...” Again, a pointed pause.
”Are we in agreement, then?” Mr Longwood finally asks you.
