"Your aunt is coming over today."
Her mother's words paralyzed Katie in her tracks. She struggled to comprehend what she just heard. This couldn't be happening. She tried to speak, but past memories muted her. All she could utter was "What?"
"I told her about what you've been going through and she wanted to help out. She'll be arriving in a few hours."
"But I... I thought she was in jail!" Katie stammered. She had to be. When the police took her away, that was the last time Katie would ever see her. Never again was she going to humiliate Katie.
"She was released on parole last week. Now Katie," her mother continued, "please be nice to her. She had a rough time in prison."
That only made Katie more nervous. Sensing her emotions, Katie's mother put her hands on her shoulders as she spoke. "Don't worry, she's here to help you. Just remember to let her in, okay?"
As soon as her mom was out the door, Katie thought about what she could do next.
