This is getting embarrassing. You're worked up, dressed down, sneaking out with nowhere to go and now you've been reduced to taking the stairs. You almost think you hear laughter coming from above you as you feel a twinge of regret for not throwing the potion down the sink.

You catch yourself on the railing just before you fall. You stop to breathe for a moment and think.
