You cannot get these terrible thoughts out of your head. You panic and break into a sprint.
As you run, you turn back and look for the van. In your paranoia, you're sure it was following you, even though it is nowhere to be seen. You are so focused on the van, in fact, that you fail to notice a huge chunk of displaced sidewalk--until your foot catches on it and sends you hurtling toward the pavement.
