You look at Alex intently, your eyes searching his face. "How does it feel, being here like you are?"
Alex's shoulders relax slightly as he reaches into his burnt orange jumper, fingers fiddling with a packet of cigarettes. He lets out a huff of breath before answering. "It's just what it is. How do you feel being stuck on one planet knowing there's a trillion worlds out there that you'll never get to see?" His voice is tinged with an array of emotions that roll off of his back like water from feathers.
Snapping his fingers, Alex watches as a small flame magically appears. He uses it to light his cigarette, cupping his hands around the flickering fire against the dark night. He inhales deeply, letting the smoke fill his lungs before releasing it in a long sigh. "I don't know anything different to what I have here, whatever not-here is, that's the stars I'll never get to explore. I guess if you're the kinda person to get fucked up by that kind of thing I could have been bummed but ... well I just don't focus on what I can't see" he says. "I just do the best I can and try to keep things from getting too...hectic." His jaw clenches. "Whatever that takes."
You study his face in the firelight, taking in the tension around his eyes, the set of his mouth.
