High Voltage/Get Ready for Work11

From Create Your Own Story

I went home and changed into my work uniform. It consisted of jeans and a black tee shirt that scooped down to prominently display my cleavage. I wasn't happy with how prominent my breasts were made to look. I knew people would be staring at them all night, and I didn't feel comfortable with that. Once dressed, I got in my car and drove to work. Making it with minutes to spare. As I was walking into the building, I realized how preposterous this situation was. Even though Lauren had given me brief guidance the night before, it would still be impossible for me to navigate this situation. How was I supposed to be a good waitress when I didn't know the menu or who anyone was?

"Good Afternoon Lauren," someone said from behind me. I turned around to see a man dressed in a button-down shirt tucked into a pair of khaki pants. He must be part of the management. "The new nametags came in this morning," he said, reaching into a bag and pulling one out with my name on it. I looked it over as he continued talking, "It's got the Minutemen logo on it, so we can all show our JSU pride!" I quickly got a glimpse of his name tag as he walked away. He was Mark.

I pinned the nametag to my shirt and walked out towards the dining room. I had no idea what to do.

"Hey Lauren!" another employee said while waving at me from the bar.

I pretended to recognize him and walked over. "Hey," I scanned his nametag, "Jake, how's it going?"

"Slow morning so far, but we've got Monday Night Football tonight, so that should keep things busy. How about you? I heard through the grapevine that you and Shawn split up?"

I nodded my head, "Yeah, things weren't really working out."

"I'm sorry to hear that," he said.

Mark came back towards the bar, "Lauren, you've got a party of four at table 13."

I nodded my head and walked over to the group. Thankfully the restaurant was mostly empty at this time of day and it wasn't hard to figure out which table I was supposed to go to.

I smiled as I approached them, "Hi, I'm Lauren and I'll be your server today. Can I get you anything to drink?"

I pulled out my notebook and wrote down the drinks as they said them. The father wanted a beer, the wife a Sprite, the smaller child a Coke, and the other child a root beer.

I went over to the computer station and placed their orders, soon enough, Jake had a little tray with the four drinks on them. I went back over to the table and gave the beer to the father, the sprite to the woman, and then put down the coke and root beer in front of the two kids. I had already forgotten who had order which one and they looked too similar for me to tell them apart even if I did know.

I took down the family's order, placed it and waited for the cooks to prepare it. I walked over to the bar to talk to Jake. He seemed friendly enough, and he didn't have many patrons considering it was only 1:30 PM on a Monday.

"Do you have any plans tonight?" he asked.

I stammered, not expecting his question. I wasn't really comfortable with it either.

"We are both out of here at 8," he continued. "We could just grab a quick bite and a drink." I began to tell him how I only just broke up with Shawn, but he interrupted me before I could finish. "Just two co-workers, sharing a bite to eat. No strings attached."
