High Voltage/Ethics Class1C1

From Create Your Own Story

I laughed a little inside. Of all the people in the class he could have asked to get a female perspective, he asked the wrong one. "I don't think there is a wage gap," I said. Now all the heads in the class were looking back at me. "Like you said, the statistic differences are well documented. It doesn't mean that two people who hold the same position are paid differently. Women don't deserve more money just because of their gender. Those who work hard will be rewarded!"

"So, you're saying that if I gave Tom ten dollars, and only gave you seven dollars even though you both spoke, you're okay with that?" he asked.

I thought about it for a moment. "I want what I deserve. I want to earn my money, not be given it." Many of the students were now nodding their heads. "I hope you think this is a thought-out response and will pay me $10 for it."

The professor walked over to Tom and gave him a ten dollar bill. Then he walked over to me, "Unfortunately, Lauren, you are in the minority. I am your manager, and a man. I don't see your perspective, so I take Tom's side because it resonates with me." He reached into his wallet and gave me a five dollar bill. "Now don't you wish there were more protections to ensure fairness for you? Don't you wish women were better represented in the management?"

The class continued, but I quickly lost interest. This was subjective bullshit. This is why I studied science. Before I knew it, both my classes were over, and it was time to get ready for work.
