I didn’t know why mom was so happy and why dad was so upset, but after a month I found out why.
Mom, I'm home! I shouted as I closed the door behind me. I quickly took off my shoes and rushed to the computer. Every day I could only play for 2 hours and then I would have to watch t.v. It was really frustrating when this little angel just comes out of nowhere and blocks your internet. Suddenly I notice a stranger. Well that’s weird I thought, I wonder what he’s doing here. Unfazed I turned on the computer, and that was when everything went downhill.
"Heinrich come sit over here" I turned around and was surprised to see Dad. Isn't he supposed to be in America? Why is he here? Then I began to worry, I never saw him like this before. He looked tired, and his eyes were swollen. My dad was in the military once, every able bodied man in Taiwan had to serve his country. He was the strongest man I knew, my role model, but this was the first time in my life I saw him cry.
"You don't have to be scared" said my mom
"I'm right here, and I'll always be with you, but there are laws. Everything in this country has to be legal."
"So what we need to do is make some decisions. That's what Mr. 張天明 is here for. Many times these decisions are left up to the courts but that can be very expensive, Heinrich people fighting over their children."
"Nobody is fighting. Look at me, Heinrich. Nobody is fighting." said my dad.
"Dad, what's going on?" I asked. No response
"Dad, what's going on?" My vision began to blur. The world began to spin around me.
"Hello. Do you understand what we're saying to you, Heinrich? Your father and I are getting a divorce, but nothing is going to change. We're still gonna see each other." She slid a piece of paper to me. "You don't have to read all of this.Most of it's for your parents-- boring adult business-- but this paragraph right here, this is important because it states who you're gonna live with...after the divorce...whose custody you will be in.And there's a blank space right here.And I want you to go into the kitchen sit at the table and put a name down.You can take as long as you want but when you come back into this room...I want to see a name on that line."
"Heinrich, just write down a name and this will all be over." pleaded my dad
"It's gonna be okay." said my mom
"What name, what are you talking about?" I asked
"Your mother or your father.Just put the name there. It's as simple as that. And don't look so scared.It's not a test. There's no wrong answer."
