You wonder what they are up to so you quietly creep up to the front flap of the tent and slowly pull the flap aside. You peer inside and it looks like Lin and Claire have zipped their sleeping bags together and are lying next to each other talking softly. You listen intently to hear what they are saying.
Lin glances in your direction. She sees your face in the darkness and lets out a blood-curdling scream that was surely heard over the entire campground, if not the entire county.
You quickly turn on a flashlight that you brought with you just in case. As Lin calms down, she recognizes your face. “Oh, it’s just you. You gave me such a fright.”
“I was out on patrol and wanted to check in on you,” you say.
“Other than waking everyone else up, I think everything’s okay now,” Claire says. “Maybe Lin will be able to calm down and get to sleep before midnight.”
You know you can’t stay here too long after that racket. “Sorry for startling you, girls.” You make sure they are okay before leaving their tent.
You walk through the tent complex, this time with your flashlight on, going through the motions of doing a ‘real’ patrol. You see several other girls stuck their head out of their tent to see what is going on, but they seem reassured by your presence that everything is being taken care of.
When you get back near your tent, you run into Peggy. “Is everything okay?” she asks.
“Fine. One of the girls thought she saw a snake or something, but it was just shadows playing tricks on her eyes.” The excuse comes to you quickly to cover the real reason for the scream.
Peggy accepts you excuse and heads back to bed. You crawl into your bed and quickly fall asleep.
