Downfall/Okay then, forget it

From Create Your Own Story

You turn around, slightly angered. Of course you could now start to argue with Cate, but what good would it bring? The both of you will have to work together to stay alive, and you don't have the luxury to go separate ways for a while after a fight. Another ten minutes later, your anger flies away when you hear Cate silently groaning. It appears as she is in pain and suppressing noises not to alert you.

"Cate? Are you okay?" you ask.

"Yes, I am. The bed of leaves is just a little uncomfortable, that's all."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, don't worry."

"Well, I do worry. I won't push you, but if you hurt, we have to do tend to it. We need to be in the best condition possible, or we'll struggle heavily until help arrives."

"You might think I'm crazy," Cate hums to the tune of a well known song from The Cars. To an outsider, such a reaction would appear weird, but not to you. You recognise it to be a displacement activity, expressing what she thinks while she makes up her mind on how to approach the topic. It must be something embarrassing; maybe she scratched up her bottom on a stone and is too bashful to ask you to help to clean the wound.

"So... you remember what we talked about before, Jules?"

"Doing everything needed to survive? Like eating weird stuff."

"Yes. And no."

"You are crazy. That doesn't make sense."

"It will in a moment. Think back further."

"Can't you just say it? It's not the best time for a quiz."

"It's not easy, Jules. It is not easy at all. I don't want to barge out with it and have you yell at me."

"What in the world...?" If you were a cartoon character, a huge question mark would pop out over your head. You think back, trying to remember what you were discussing and how Cate could have hurt herself. She didn't complain about anything, didn't she? No, not really; the only thing that bothered her was... "Oh, no way. No fucking way."

"Everything it takes, Jules."

"But not that, Cate. That is so weird."

"It has been more than half an hour now, and I can't remove the blockage. There is only one way I can think of right now, unless you have a better idea. And it would kill two birds with one stone. Why let it go to waste?"

"But drinking breast milk..."

"Every little bit counts. It can't sustain an adult, I know, but it is nutritious."

No wonder Cate couldn't just come forward and 'spill' it. You wonder if she already had factored that in back then and not only disgusting insects. Either way, she has to deal with the blockage. You know how painful it can be.
