Adventures in Space/AiS Explain

From Create Your Own Story

You decide that you need to keep Sozin in the loop. After you tell him what happened, he says, "Commander, I don't like what you did. But now that we're in this mess, the only way out is to go rescue that ship. If we save them, the public may judge that the end justifies the means. If this goes wrong, then God help us."
"Good to know you're with me. I don't know how Phogison managed to mobilise the rest of the fleet so quickly."
"By our calculations they must have minimised their weight. By loading on less equipment and fuel they are reducing their capabilities, but increasing their average speed. Another thing - do your crew know the situation? I hope you haven't tried to keep them blindfolded."
"You're right, Hazael." You switch to the first name - you can't pretend this is official business any more. "It's better if they hear it from the horse's mouth than by rumours." Hazael Sozin, satisfied for now, blinks off the screen. You make the announcement to the crew that you are going against orders out of compassion for those on board the drifting ship. To your relief no-one tries to relieve you of command.

"Sir, we are approaching the craft, it's the Nebulous," states your senior scanning officer. The computer has no records of such a ship. It is considerably larger than the Jarif, a typical cargo ship by the looks of it. There are no energy readings, but there is a lot of static (noise) coming across all frequencies. No chance of communicating, then. One option would be to fire a very low intensity laser shot and see if the Nebulous puts up her shields. (The Mortis has better and longer range weaponry than the Jarif).
