The Metropolis of Nawako, known in Coullan as Showi Mahasap Gan Nawako, known informally as Nawako, is the capital and largest city of Coulla. Located on both sides of the Chaeul River's mouth into Nawako Bay, Nawako is sometimes referred to in both English and Coullan as "the city on the river" or "the city by the bay".

Nawako is the most populous city in the world, and is divided into several city wards, each of which are governed by a respective mayor and city council. Nawako has a registered population of about 22 million, and the Nawako Metropolitan Area (NMA), which takes up all of Nawako Prefecture and parts of the surrounding prefectures of Aoken, Bol Patal, Himbako Kuong, Nakoho, and Sanedam, has a population of over 40 million.

Being the capital city of the most prosperous country in Asia, Nawako is a magnet for foreigners trying to escape oppression in their homeland and find a better life. Nawako also attracts a lot of tourism, due to it's warm climate and sprawling beaches, along with thriving industries such as technology and fasion. Due to it's major league football (soccer), and baseball teams, and due to it being home to the Coulla International Open tennis championships, Nawako is a favorite destination for sports fans from all over.

History

Wabon Garden was built to honor Emperor Mahana Hakowul in 1456.

The town of Hui, a small fishing village in the early 1000's, was located on the south side of the Chaeul River, and on the easternmost tip of the Grand Coullan Plains (Mikui Saka Saramawappon). In 1069, the seat of the emperor of the kingdom of Chuime, the precursor of modern Coulla, was moved to the town of Hui, which was renamed Nawako, meaning "eastern capital" in Coullan. As the kingdom of Chuime grew, it became the leading power in Coulla, and is the background of the current emperor's family.

Geography

Nawako is located on the Grand Coullan Plains, the largest area in Coulla not home to mountains. Central Nawako, located on a delta created by the Chaeul and Sehe rivers, is home to mostly flat land.

Nawako's climate is primarily tropical, and it's average daily temperature is 30 degrees celcius in the winter and 37 in the summer. Along Nawako's beaches, the water is a Caribbean-blue color, but the water maintains a darker and blacker color along the seaports due to heavy water pollution from the 106 thousand ships that dock each year.

Districts

Nawako is divided into five city districts, and each district is divided into several city wards. Below is a list of these districts.

Economy

Nawako is the economic center of Coulla, dominating the country and dwarfing other economic centers throughout Southeast Asia. Development is constant in Nawako, while smaller towns throughout the nation seem to stay neutral. In December 2008, Nawako produced a GDP (PPP) of USD 2.2 trillion, the highest in the world. Nawako is home to the Stock Exchange of Coulla, with over 2500 listed companies and a combined market capitalization of CYU 750 trillion (USD 7.5 trillion) as of December 2007. As Asia's largest and primate economic center, Nawako maintains status as one of the largest business centers of the world.

Nawako has 17 164 acres of agricultural land, placing it last among the rest of Coulla's prefectures, due to the major overcrowding of Coulla's largest habitable area. In January 2008, Nawako was rated the world's most expensive city to live in, although this is not a problem for most of Nawako's residents due to the enormous economy, making it almost impossible not to find a well-paying job in Nawako.

Nawako is a magnet for residents of smaller towns throughout Coulla, because of the major economy. Due to Coulla's infrastructure, residents of small towns generally live in higher poverty than residents of large cities, giving Nawako the world's highest growth rate, composed of natives to Coulla and immigrants looking for a better life.

Nawako is a major tourist destination, due to the tropical climate, and is the nation's main international gateway to it's own right. In 2008, the tourism industry had a CMC of USD 1.2 trillion, one of the largest in the world. The fishing industry is enormous in Nawako, and makes up about 28% of Coulla's fishing industry.

Oil is also a major contributor to Nawako's economy, because of the major oil fields just outside of Nawako bay, and Nawako is home to Coulla's largest oil port. The Nawako Oil Boom was a major contribution to Nawako's economy. In 1978, Masage Tat Na, owner of Tat Na Oil Co., sent out several boats to patrol the coast from Menada to Yokuse, after hearing about oil fields discovered by local fishermen. What Tat Na Oil Co. discovered was Coulla's largest oil field yet, taking up 427.313 km2 of the Sea of Coulla. Since then, Nawako has been one of the world's leaders in the oil industry, and it is still growing.

Transportation

Rail

MaeMetro Nawako subways map.

Nawako is Coulla's largest hub for rail, ground, and air transportation. Public transportation is primarily operated by MaeMetro, operator of all of Nawako's subways and most of Nawako's Skytrains (elevated rail trains). The extensive network of rail is Nawako's primary public transportation, with buses and trams playing a secondary role. Ground-level trains are operated by Coulla Railways Company, and serve primarily as transport between cities and towns, while MaeMetro's subways and Skytrains serve as commuter and public transportation. A notable fact is that all passenger trains in Nawako run on electricity.

Buses

Buses serve as a secondary public transportation, but are incredibly busy nevertheless, due to Nawako's incredible overcrowding problem. MaeMetro operates Nawako's bus system. There are two types of buses.

Urban Buses serve the city and stop at every bus stop, and are the most common type of bus. Express Buses stop only at major bus stations, and serve as an express for commuters between the suburbs and the commercial core.

Air

Jitsumi International Airport is Nawako's largest airport, and serves primarily as an international gateway to Nawako and Coulla, while Tatsumi International Airport serves primarily as a domestic airport, and a gateway to the rest of Coulla. Gotsumi International Airport, Nawako's first international airport, was shut down in 2005 due to little traffic in comparison to Jitsumi and Tatsumi.

Expressways

Expressways (highways) race through Nawako, ducking below and climbing above major streets, twisting and turning in an effort to make their way through the bustling capital. In order to encourage rail transport, all expressways in Coulla are tolled with a 700 yu charge at each ramp.

HSRP

An HSRP 2000 Series races above Zutsune Bypass.

The High-Speed Rail Project, or HSRP, is a network of high-speed trains connecting all of Coulla's major cities. The HSRP Honabei-Kankyo line, the main line serving Nawako, stops at three stations in the city before continuing on to Tesuryioku, the nation's second largest city.

Education

See main article: Education in Coulla

The majority of Nawako's universities are located in the major wards, Keitasho University and Monshibam University being the forefront of Nawako's post-secondary education. Nawako maintains its status as one of the smartest cities in the world, with 99.397% of its population literate, due to enrollment in all forms of education, including post-secondary education, being free.

Sister Cities
