pokemon is a great game, the purpose in most of them is to try and get 8 badges and then go to the elite 4, but inbetween there are different obsticles(like team rocket, team magma/aqua, team galactic). Pokemon are like monsters that have different skills and look different, and they usually evolve into bigger better more cool looking guys.

Generation 1
the first few pokemon games(dubbed gen 1)were fantastic, because its brand new and the third gen 1 game was a little different than the other 2 gen 1 games, i would recommend this game played first if you have a gameboy advance SP or lower(because you cant play original game boy games on a DS).there were 152 pokemon back then(although the 151st pokemon is more like a secret character, and the 152nd pokemon isnt really a pokemon, its dubbed a glitch, its name is Missingno, they tried pulling out a pokemon and i guess they only managed to pull the image and characteristics of the pokemon out because depending on your game, it either looks like a fuzzy square(or something to that effect), or in gen 3 it looks like a ? that appears in the pokedex when you hover over a pokemon # you havent seen yet. anyways its a glitch and if you catch it your game glitches, of course, and you have to go back to your last save since it freezes the game and thats the only thing TO do. however this glitch isnt all bad. if dont successfully, missingno can give you an unlimited amount of rare candies/master balls/whatever you want, anyways, he has grown to be an infamous character of gen 1)
Generation 2
generation 2 was still new, possibly even better than gen 1, but in this game you have the same objective, however theres like.......i dunno, 100+ new pokemon? not exactly sure but the pokemon of gen 2 were pretty sweet, thats i think when they made up dual type, having 2 types at the same time. ANYWAYS in this game there was time(unlike gen 1)and with time there was day, afternoon, and night, and with a unique system of finding pokemon too(you could only find certain pokemon on certain times of the day). there was also a new invention called berry trees and berrys, which if held by your pokemon, automatically come into effect once needed. so there were no glitches i know of in Gen 2, it was just awesome because of the pokemon/time. in this game, they came up with baby pokemon, which were pokemon that were pre-evolutions to other pokemon that came out of eggs. examples of this are pichu, cleffa, smoochum, and igglybuff, azurill, and wynaut. this game also featured unknowns, which were like pokemon albhabet, there was a different unknown for every letter in the alphabet, which in this specific ruins, there was a side quest to get all of them and record them in the unknowndex, i however, never did this because i thought it was a waste of good pokeballs/time.
Generation 3
Generation 3 was starting to lose its touch, but was still filled with WIN, because in this game there were secret bases and moar pokermans(slang term for pokemon). Anyways same purpose in this game as the other 2 generations, but the time effect was lost in this game(which made me sad since it was such a good quality). The game had 100+ moar new pokemon, and probably more legendaries in this game than any other so far. there wasnt much new in this game except the bases and the pokemon, you still had the same plot, same old sidequests(maybe a bit different but most still involving team magma/aqua). i cant think of much for gen 3 right now, basically because it wasnt much different, yet somehow still win. OHYE i remember somthing interesting now...Feebas, he was quite possibly one of THE most rarest non legendary pokermans to get in gen 3, and quite possibly in all of the gens, but he only appeared if you fished with an old rod in 2, 3 squares of a whole route, and thats pretty rare, and even yet, you could change those spots with the trendy phase in that one island town. but yea, that was the interesting thing of gen 3 pretty much...
Generation 4
generation 4, for me, was quite possibly the most bleh of all pokerman games. i mean it was fun and all, but i dunno, i guess the same old objective for the 4th time bored me(actually 5th time if you consider fire red and leaf green)...im not writing much about this because just of the reason i never actually beat this game yet(it bored me so much i quit playing after i got the 6th gym badge X_X)and i have yet to come back to it and beat it. maybe after i beat it ill put more information, but the main bad guys are team galactic, and the main good guy guy has a weird fashion senses(he looks like a frenchy) the other is dawn from the anime, she looks pretty good i guess.
