  • Knowledge of Norse religion and folklore (Not excessive knowledge like a cleric would have, just what a religious commoner would have.)
  • Can carve wood for decorative or practical purposes and knows enough about clinker-built shipbuilding to make most repairs a ship of this type would need.
  • Speaks Norse and some phrases of Old English

Personality:

Friendly and generous, with a sense of humour. Enjoys telling and listening to stories. Makes friends easily. Although not overly argumentative, can be very stubborn. Is a very action-orientated person and often prefers action to thought and discussion. Would go out of his way to help a friend. Brutal in combat and sometimes goes slightly berzerk when fighting.

History:

Kjartan was born in a small coastal village in Norway. Like all the other boys in the village, he grew up beleiving in the glory of war and the Viking ways, told tales and legends by the old men of the village and playing at raiding the camps of his friends. His family eked out an existence by fishing and he worked the boat with his father and brothers from an early age. Occasionally, his father would join the crew of a local Jarl and go raiding across the sea. He would come back bearing gifts, and occasionally fresh wounds. When he was about 16, Kjartan went on his first raid. After weeks at sea, the ship arrived at a monastery in Northumbria. The monks were taken by surprise, as was the local population. The monastery was theirs, its only defence an old man's begging pleas to his god. They took a haul of silver, bronze and other, less valuable but still useful items such as ironwork, food and beer. They left before the local fyrd could arrive, and returned to their homes triumphant. Kjartan was given a share of the loot- not much, but enough to let him live easily for a time. The real thing had proved to be just as grand as the tales had promised. From now on, Kjartan would take part in many other raids. At the age of 19, he married Gisela, a woman from a neighbouring village. They were happy together, and just under a year after they got married, his first son, Harald, was born. Harald was followed by two more boys, Einar and Karl, and a girl, Freydis. Kjartan raised his children in much the same way his father had raised him. While on his raids on England, he noticed how good the land was. In comparison, the land his farm was on was very poor. Eventually, he joined the invading army of Halfdan Ragnarsson and Ivarr the Boneless. In 865, the army wintered in East Anglia. He decided that this was where he and his family would now live. Shortly after Nothumbria's fall in 867, Kjartan sent for his family. They arrived in 878 and built their home on Northumbria's eastern coast. Two years later, during a raid on a town in Kent, Kjartan saw a fat man dressed in expensive clothing carrying a chest running down an alleyway. Grinning, he realised he'd just found an easy profit. For the man to take it with him, that chest had to contain something valuable. probably a merchant trying to hide his silver... Kjartan gave chase. He planned to hit the man on the head with the flat of his axe, take his chest and his clothes, then 'politely' ask him where the rest of his possessions were. The man saw him and ran faster, but there was no way a ball of lard like him could outrun a strong man in his prime such as Kjartan. The man ducked into a doorway. Kjartan went through after him, and something hit him on the back of the head. The last thing he saw as he blacked out was the fat man. He said something. Kjartan couldn't understand what it was he said, as his hearing was distorted, and the man wasn't speaking Norse, or any form of English that Kjartan recognised. When he woke up, he was in the Dungeon. He is now trying to escape this hellish place and rejoin his wife and children.
