Background
Sasuke grew up in the close knit, genius Uchiha clan known for their powers with the Sharingan. The Sharingan is an dojutsu that allows a person to copy other ninjas moves. Because of this, the Uchiha clan was considered the strongest in the village of Konoha. Sasuke idolized his older brother Uchiha Itachi and worked hard to become as strong as him. But this peace was ruptured when Itachi mercilessly slaughtered every member of the clan, leaving only seven year old Sasuke behind. He mocks a traumatized Sasuke, instructing him to run and live in a pathetic way until he gained the strength to defeat him. From this point on, Sasuke swears to be an avenger.
Sasuke spends his life alone until he's 12, where he's put in a team underneath Hatake Kakashi. Team Seven works together somewhat grudgingly, but a camaraderie is eventually formed between Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke. However, Sasuke's Sharingan picks up the attention of Orochimaru, a creepy former Konoha ninja intent on destroying the village. Orochimaru also has obtained a sort of immortality by implenting himself into their bodies and assimilating their abilities. By doing this and obtaining Sasuke's ability, Orochimaru would be able to learn all the jutsus in the world. He marks Sasuke with a curse seal, and declares to Kakashi that the boy will one day come to him for power.
No one is excited about this! Orochimaru is bad news, even Sasuke knows it. But the kid abandoning the village isn't even a possibility until Itachi reappears. After being MIA for many years, Itachi returns to Konoha- not to meet with Sasuke, but with Naruto. Sasuke tries to intervene and get his revenge, but is easily beat into submission by his brother. At this point, he realizes how the gap between himself and Itachi has not changed, that he hasn't become stronger. Sasuke flies into a rage and challenges Naruto, threatens Kakashi, suddenly incensed to become stronger. In this vulnerable point, Orochimaru returns and persuades Sasuke to leave Konoha.
After Sakura meets him at the edge of town and fails to stop him, Naruto catches up to Sasuke at the border of Fire Country. Sasuke informs Naruto very clearly that he wants nothing to do with his teammates or Konoha any longer. The boy fight desperately, with Sasuke only narrowly winning. He leaves.
Two and a half years after his departure, Naruto and Sakura infiltrate Orochimaru's stronghold and meet with Sasuke. In this brief meeting, Sasuke clears up two points; He'll willingly give up his Sharingan to Orochimaru in six months. The second point, he explains by drawing a sword against a stunned Naruto. He only spared the other boy on a whim, and on a similar whim he could kill him. The remains of Team Seven are quickly thrashed abandoned, and Sasuke disappears with Orochimaru and Kabuto.
In Purgatory
Sasuke has been around quietly for some time, but has become somewhat more active with the influx of Naruto characters appearing on the island. But now that Itachi has shown up, Sasuke has a purpose again. He wants to see Naruto and Sakura, and has a feeling Kakashi is preventing this.
