Kuchiki Rukia (born 14 January) is a character from Bleach. She is Ichigo's best friend, a good friend to Rukia, and the one that Abarai Renji appears to be in love with. And hey, she lives with all of them at the moment. She also has a terrible self-esteem.

Information
Background
Rukia's life in the actual world was cut very short. She and her sister Hisana died together, and when they arrived in the Soul Society—in one of the poorest districts—Hisana abandoned Rukia. Later, she ended up marrying Byakuya Kuchiki. This led to interesting parts in Rukia's life, but that happened much later.
Because of the abandonment, Rukia grew up without any guidance and ended up attaining a rather tough outer shell. This shell has never completely gone away, even as she became a noble and acquired that way of life. In the poor part of the district, she struggled to survive until she acquired a sort of family. Abarai Renji was a part of this family, and the two were close, even protective of one another, until all their friends died and they realized they needed to make something of themselves. Given their spiritual energy that they have, they decide to enter the academy for shinigami.
While in the academy, Rukia is adopted into the Kuchiki family, whereas Renji moves very far. Renji seems almost too happy when Rukia becomes a member of the family and she feels abandoned by her good friend. As a result of this, Renji swore he would always be strong for her and did his best to end up underneath Byakuya (inevitably becoming his Lieutenant in the 6th Division). Rukia was clueless as to why he did this, and she ended up in the 13th Division, where she remained in a position where she could never advance. It was in the 13th Division that she fell in love with Shiba Kaien. Despite the fact that he was married and she deeply respected his wife, she still loved him. He ended up dying on her sword.
Some time after, she arrived in Ichigo's house. It was there that he acquired the abilities of a shinigami from her and ended up having to learn to defeat hollows. Two sides of the same coin, Rukia and Ichigo became very good friends and ended up becoming quite dependent on one another. It all ended when Rukia was found to be living in the real world and she was dragged back to the Soul Society—and Gotei 13—for giving her powers to Ichigo. Her brother Byakuya was unwilling to stop her from being put on trial, and inevitably executed, but multiple other people weren't so willing to let this happen. Among these people included Ichigo, his friends Orihime, Ishida, and Chad, as well as her old friend Renji. From different angles, all of them battled to rescue her, but Rukia herself—well, she was actually rather willing to give up. It was Byakuya who saved her in the end from Aizen and Gin, who had plotted to have her executed all along in order to take over the Gotei 13.
Ichigo ended up being one of the heroes of the day and despite everything, Rukia chose to stay behind. Since it was of her own choice, he didn't mind it so much.
Some time after, she showed up in Ichigo's world with a number of other shinigami. It was there that she revealed that she was actually quite powerful, but held back. She fought her hardest against the arrancar with Ichigo, but did not prove to be particularly capable of taking them on. After the arrancar went away. She encouraged Orihime to start fighting and started training her, explaining to her that she was also rather important to everything.
It was because of this training that Orihime was taken by Aizen and the espada. Rukia and Renji and the other shinigami were forced to stay in the Soul Society while Ichigo, Ishida, and Chad went to rescue Orihime. Rukia undoubtedly feels guilty because of this.
In Purgatory
Rukia arrived in Purgatory around the same time as Ichigo and has been living with him ever since. She's been hesitant to get a job the entire time, and instead has worked around the apartment washing dishes and keeping it clean. During the tournament, she was on a team with Renji and Ichigo. The team didn't win, but did get pretty far.
