History (manga)

The Hyuuga family had one primary house and a secondary house - the heirs and whatnot all came from the primary house, and would be taught lots of awesome Hyuuga family ninja moves, while those of the secondary house would be branded with a funky-looking swastika kinda thing and told they only existed to protect their counterpart in the primary house. Neji's counterpart turned out to be his cousin, Hinata - their fathers were identical twin brothers, the short amount of time between their births being the deciding factor on which would belong to which house. So as a kid, Neji was branded, and he trained to fulfill his role as Hinata's protector. But then!!!1 His dad is killed in place of Hinata's dad, and Neji basically decides to screw the whole "protect Hinata" thing and goes off to train on his own and master the special Hyuuga techniques.

So he goes through ninja school with the rest of the main cast, gets assigned to a team with classmates Lee and Tenten, and is a general ass to everybody. Cause he's kinda like Sasuke Lite - now with half the angst and twice the anger! His team makes it through the early stages of the advancement exams pretty easily, and then comes the final bit of the exam: a huge-ass battle between randomly-generated pairs. Neji's opponent winds up to be Hinata, and the fight became something of a symbolic family feud; being the stronger, Neji won. Time passes, blah blah, more fights, blah blah, and then it's down to the last few rounds! Naruto and Neji get paired to fight, and Naruto's all GRRR RAR because Neji was an ass to Hinata and beat her up pretty badly. So they fight, Naruto wins, and while recovering in the infirmary, Neji learns what really happened to his father (his dad chose to take Hinata's dad's place as opposed to being forced into it by obligation).

And then Neji has an epiphany or something, but he's still pretty much an ass. More time passes, Sasuke gets all superemo, and then he goes off to become SNAKEMAN JR. So Shikamaru takes a team of 5 with him to bring Sasuke back and stop the four ninjas of the hidden sound who are transporting emoboy to Orochimaru (aka snakeman). The team consists of Shikamaru, Chouji, Neji, Kiba and Naruto. Essentially, each of the five winds up breaking off from the group to face off against one of the sound ninjas, in order to buy the rest more time. Neji wound up fighting this guy who could turn his spit into webs and stuff, which is pretty gross. But Neji won, even though he got beaten pretty badly and almost died. The mission was an overall failure, but at least everybody survived.

And then there was a time jump! And that's it. XD

In Purgatory

Shortly after arriving in Purgatory, Neji took up residence in a rather remote apartment house at the edge of the local forest, where he likes to train. He was also approached to work at the local airport as a sort of human X-ray machine, which he pretty much only accepted because the pay is good. He, Lee and Tenten entered a fighting tournament not long after his arrival, though they lost in their second round.

Neji is currently a junior at the local high school, and plays goalie for the hockey team.
