THE CANON

Bernard is a grouchy Irish bastard. He aquired a bookshop at some point after failing spectacularly to become a published novelist or earn any real literary cred. Black Books became a tiny, dirty second-hand bookshop run by a maniac who hated the customers and spent any profit on booze and cigarettes. It was located next door to the shop of Fran, Bernard's best friend (if such a word could be applied to Bernard) and drinking partner.

All was well until Bernard, desperate to be injured and get out of his tax return, saved a beardy young accountant from some skinheads. Manny is everything Bernard is not; tidy, hard-working, good-natured and eager to please. He takes a job at the bookshop and while Bernard originally hates and uses Manny, after the three seasons he eventually... mildly dislikes and uses Manny. Except for all those times Manny storms off, in which case he mildly dislikes and misses Manny.

Bernard, Manny and Fran have many exciting and humourour adventures together, but Bernard remains a snarky alcoholic bastard. He is pitiable, like a kicked and vaguely vicious puppy whose girlfriend faked her own death to get out of a relationship with him, and he is kind of loveable if one can tolerate the ash-covered trousers, wine-spotted shirts and the faint smell of mould that seems to surround him like an aura.
