Show Summary

In the year 2030, humanity has become a meld of man and machine, and the Net has evolved into the primary medium of society. Public Security Section 9 enforces the law in both reality and cyberspace.

Ghost in the Shell is an excellent example of near-future postcyberpunk SF.

Episode Structure

There are two kinds of episodes in Ghost in the Shell (GitS). "Stand Alone" episodes are just that - one shot adventures into the world of 2030 that have little or nothing to do with the main plot. They may delve into the backstory of a particular character or explain some aspect of life in the cybernetic age, or simply involve a whole lot of gunplay and cyborg martial arts.

Complex episodes are pieces of the main plot: the investigation of the series of crimes known as the "Laughing Man Incident."

Characters

Motoko Kusanagi: Often known simply as "the Major," she is the de facto field leader of Section 9. She is completely prosthetic except for her brain and part of her spine. The Major is known for her hacking ability and combat prowess.

Batou: Another full prosthetic, Batou is ex-military and has known the Major for a long time. He has a habit of buying weight-training equipment despite the fact that excercise will not make him stronger. His combat skills are perhaps second only to the Major's.

Togusa: Togusa is almost completely human, except for a few cyberbrain implants. He is also the only member of Section 9 who is married. Togusa is possibly the teams best conventional detective, and he often gets assigned to investigative work.

Saito: The team sniper, Saito is the second-most natural on the team, with an artificial forearm and eye. He is usually brought in for combat-heavy missions.

Ishikawa: Ishikawa spends most of his time back at Section 9 headquarters handling the computerized side of Section 9's duties. He is a top-notch hacker and often called upon to gather information or engage in electronic warfare.

Paz and Borma: Getting relatively little airtime in the series, Paz and Borma handle field work and investigations. More about Paz's character is revealed in 2nd GIG, though Borma remains a mystery.

Daisuke Aramaki: Section 9's boss, Aramaki is an old hand at the bureaucratic wrangling required to succeed. He does most of his work "behind the scenes," pulling strings and pushing the politicians toward the best solution.

Trivia

GitS: SAC makes many references to The Catcher in the Rye, a classic American novel by JD Salinger.

Much of the dialog in the episode "Android and I" comes from the film Breathless (A Bout de Souffle)

The original Ghost in the Shell movie (never shown on [as]) is cited as one of the major inspirations for the movie The Matrix. w00t!
