A cheerfully obstinate boy, Bartleby's mother sent him to a monastery at a young age, to learn the trade (where he would not annoy his father). There, he worked hard, and though occasionally he would simply refuse to do his work, his eccentricity was tolerated. When the abbot learned of Bartleby's talent for distilling, he transferred the young man to a monastery in Rothskild, that he might study and bring back what knowledge of northern techniques he might learn. Unfortunately, his aptitude for the stills led to a fondness for liquor-- and while deep in his cups, he dallied with an alewife. Thrown out of the monastery and left to make his own way through life, Bartleby decided to explore the area of Heorot, where he had heard rumours of some "strange scholars" making their way to the haunted site-- he suspects these are the same sort of folks for whom his father worked.
