Hexes in the World of Catan is the very foundation of the basic game. Islands and water are created using illustrated hexes that demonstrate geographic features from ocean to desert to mountain. Without the hexes, The Settlers of Catan would be a very boring and not very unique game. Hexes are the means of collecting production cards and fish.
