Before Harry was born, Professor Albus Dumbledore had a meeting at a pub called the Hog's Head with a rather odd looking person named Sibyll Trelawney. This meeting was intended to be an interview for a teaching position at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During the course of this meeting the following prophecy was given by then soon-to-be Professor Trelawney[HP5]
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches ... Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies ... And the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not ... And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives ... The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...[HP5]"
Dumbledore tells us "A servant of Lord Voldemort was present at the Hog's Head, and overheard the first part of Trelawney's prophecy but was thrown from the building before the prophecy was completed."[HP5]
[edit] Birth and Infancy
On July 31, 1980 Lily and James Potter gave birth to a baby boy that they named Harry James. Little did they know what their son would grow up to be. Hearing of Harry's birth, Voldemort decided that he must be the one reffered to in the prophecy inevitably fufilling Clause 4 of the Prophecy.
Knowing that Voldemort was looking for young Harry, the Potters attempted to hide him with the Fidelius Charm and almost named Harry's Godfather, Sirius Black as the Secret Keeper, but swiched at the last minute to Peter Pettigrew. This descision turned out to be a bad one, as Pettegrew was a spy for Voldemort and as such, reveiled the location of young Harry, Godric's Hollow.
On October 31, 1981, went to the Godric's Hollow residence and attempted to kill Harry. His dad attempted to hold Voldemort off at the door but failed and was subsequently murdered. His mother tried to run with him but Voldemort caught her. He offered to spare her life, but she stood in his way and he killed her to get to Harry. This sacrifice turned out to save him due to the ancient magic of this act of love. Afer she was dead, Voldemort attempted to kill harry with the Avada Kedavra killing curse. Do to his mothers sacrifice the curse deflected onto Voldemort, who was all but killed. The curse left a lighening bolt scar on Harry's forehead.
The house at Godric's Hollow was left in ruins. There was no conceivable way that the house could be livable in. Dumbledore, aware of the events that were going on, sent Rubeus Hagrid to get baby Harry and bring him to Number 4 Privet Drive, the residence of his Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia Dursley.

Life with the Dursleys amounted to abuse. Harry was never told about his wizarding abilities. His Aunt told him that his mother and father dies in a car crash. They were determined to remove all magic from him. In 1985, Harry started Elementary (Primary) School at Smeltings School The same school The Dursleys son, Dudley, attended. Dudley was just as mean to Harry as his Aunt and Uncle were. However they may have tried to supress and/or eliminate his magical abilities, they had a nasty habit of showing up when unexpected. This happened at least twice while at the elementary school, once, when he turns a teacher's wig blue, and the other when he dissaparates and reapparates himself on top of the school kitchens when he was being chased by Dudley's gang.
