In 1903, George A. Dorris established the first filbert orchard in Oregon by planting 50 filbert trees on his ranch just south of Springfield (Horvat and Melnick 1987:7)

That same year, George Dorris was appointed to represent Elliott E Lyons for the murder of Lane County Sheriff William Withers.
